Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Colorado sales saw the Bow Tie brand’s midsize pickup truck maintain second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during Q4 2024.

The Toyota Tacoma kept the top spot, which it has occupied for more than a decade, as sales grew 20 percent to 66,008 units. The Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales) remained in second place with a 120 percent jump year-over-year to 27,302 units. The Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) kept third with 15,526 deliveries. The Nissan Frontier placed fourth with a 14 percent uptick to 13,898 units. The GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales), the Colorado’s corporate cousin, kept fifth place with a 262 percent leap to 11,259 units. Finally, the Gladiator was last again with a 31 percent slide in sales to 9,453 units.

Notably, the strong sales gains of the GM and Ford trucks all reflect a recovery from a generational changeover over the previous year.

Sales of GM’s two midsize pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, combined for 38,561 deliveries and a cumulative 27 percent segment share. Though higher than their respective individual performance, that’s still no match for the Tacoma, which bested them by over 27K additional deliveries.

The midsize mainstream pickup segment expanded 47 percent to 143,446 units during Q4 2024, meaning that the Colorado grew at a much faster clip than the segment average, including the Tacoma.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Colorado sales were quite healthy during Q4 2024, posting a very impressive increase. However, sales of the all-new Toyota Tacoma were still higher, even when adding the Canyon into the mix. In fact, the General’s offering accounted for a quarter of all sales in this space overall.

On the bright side, the Colorado grew at a faster rate than the Tacoma, and Colorado sales were roughly equal to those of the Ford Ranger and the Nissan Frontier combined, even though those two models are also all-new. So while Toyota continues to prove a challenge, GM is the second most popular game in town in this space.

About Chevrolet Colorado

In May 2023, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the ZR2 Bison is offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.

The 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, incidentally, gets a standard bed-mounted spare, a new launch control feature, and a new Recovery Package. Its arrival means the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package hasn’t returned for the 2024 model year, indirectly replaced by the Bison.

Furthermore, among the many changes and updates for the new model year, the 2024 Chevy Colorado drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup, and drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine, adopting the GM’s new TurboMax engine branding as part of changes and updates for the 2024 model year. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels and the High Output L3B TurboMax engine on all other trims while optional on the WT and LT. On a related note, here are the towing capacities of the 2024 Colorado.

The 2024 Colorado also offers a new Sports Bar Package and new Off-Road Lighting Package, while Trail Boss and ZR2 trim levels now have the option of a new off-road front bumper package for enhanced off-road capability.

Here’s everything that’s new and different for the 2024 Chevy Colorado.

The fastest-turning trim level for the third-generation Colorado is the range-topping ZR2.

Check out what’s new for the 2025 Chevy Colorado in the video above. And, while you’re at it, see the five changes and improvements we’d like to see for the Bow Tie brand’s midsize pickup truck in the next update.

  1. To the author. You really should check your math. I didn’t make it past 12,396 and the supposed increase of 120% that somehow equals 27k units. You must have let AI do your math.

  3. Marty, glad to here you are loving your ZR2. However, my thoughts regarding the Bison option: L84 would make my decision to replace my K2XX. Please marketing review my request, I’m positive I’m not alone. Car guys like me love our V/8 power. Varoom…

  4. GM and Ford have really narrowed the gap between them and the Tacoma. I remember 10-20 years ago it was embarrassing how much more appealing the Tacoma was. Not anymore. There’s no excuse for American brands to be behind in quality and function of trucks, even if it’s midsize. It might take a while for the reputation to catch up though before they can match them in sales.

    1. New Tacoma has slipped in quality. The GM twins are far from perfect (the paint on these things is embarrassingly bad), but it will take a long while for the twin’s reputation to catch up to the Tacoma.

    2. I totally disagree there’s a reason Toyota Motors is the largest automotive manufacturer in the world and you actually get your money’s worth and great resale value. I’d put my money on Toyota all day long.

  5. I wish they use the 3.0L turbo that is in cadillac CT5 V into the colorado ZR2. I will complete well with ford and more desirable.

  6. Lenny, I’m as car guy as you can get, I work for GM in engineering. I did my research, duh into the 2.7 turbo and I can’t say enough good about it. It’s extraordinary how much power it has. And over 10k miles, average fuel economy almost 19. The Bison package comes down to where you live and can you use it enough to justify that cost. I got the ZR2 for one reason. I live in the snow belt in NY. It’ll go anywhere I each it to.

  7. Apparently they don’t do research before buying a car in these countries. I saw of couple different option package units at my Cheverolet / GMC dealer and thought how impressive they looked. I immediately got on my phone and started researching them. The Tacoma may have slipped according to some but they would have to fall off Mount Everest to be anywhere nearly as bad as the GM twins. Then I got my Consumer Reports magazine which just confirmed what crap GM is selling. It’s embarrassing 🙈

  8. The big three will never catch up with the quality and reliability that Toyota puts out. Why did you think they’ve been JDP’S top one or two for the last 20 year’s they are the number one auto manufacturer in the world as well.

  9. When can we build the 2025 Colorado on the Chevy website?! I even asked at my local Chevy dealership, nobody seems to have an answer.
