Cadillac EV Rival Audi Q8 E-Tron Discontinued

It was rumored in late 2024 that the Audi Q8 e-tron would be discontinued for 2025, and now it’s official. Due to its European production facility closing down, this midsize electric luxury crossover won’t see a 2025 model year in North America. It’s also produced in Changchun, China, but America’s 100-percent tariff on Chinese-built EVs would make it prohibitively expensive to market in the States.

“The Q8 e-tron is being discontinued, and we expect only 2024 MY cars to be available,” Audi spokesman Mark Dahncke told CarsDirect. “No 25 MY cars are expected to be built.”

The Audi Q8 e-tron first came out as simply the Audi e-tron in 2018 and added the Q8 moniker in 2024 as the e-tron product portfolio expanded. It served as Audi’s largest EV at the top of the e-tron crossover range.

As of this writing, the U.S. Audi consumer site has the Q4 e-tron and Q6 e-tron available for the 2025 model year. However, it only shows the 2024 model year for the Q8 e-tron, SQ8 e-tron, and their Sportback variants. On the Canadian consumer site, the Audi Q8 e-tron has vanished entirely.

The first hint that the Audi Q8 e-tron would be discontinued in North America came from an Automotive News report that said Q8 e-tron orders were slowing and the Audi Brussels plant in Belgium could shut down in February 2025. The Audi Q8 e-tron (and the Audi e-tron before it) was the only vehicle produced at the Brussels plant since 2018. Before that, it built various Audi, Volkswagen, and SEAT models, and it’s estimated that 3.8 million VW Golf units were produced there between 1980 and 2007.

The closest GM rival to the Audi Q8 e-tron was the Cadillac Lyriq. They’re both midsize two-row electric luxury crossovers, and the Lyriq is actually slightly bigger than the Q8 e-tron despite being more affordable. The 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron had a starting price of $75,595, which is pricier than the Lyriq’s sub-$60k base price for both the 2024 and 2025 model years. Also of note is that the American-made Cadillac Lyriq qualifies for the federal EV tax credit, and the Audi Q8 e-tron does not, exacerbating the price gap between the two.
