21 Mile 1989 Chevy Blazer Headed To Auction In Arizona

Bowing for the 1969 model year, the Chevy Blazer was a direct competitor for the International Harvester Scout and Ford Bronco. Known as the K5, the Blazer was built on a shortened Chevy K10 pickup truck frame. The Blazer was only available in four-wheel-drive configuration for that first model year, but could be had in two-wheel-drive guise beginning with the 1970 model year. The Blazer came with a full-length lift-off hardtop. The first-generation Blazer was built for 1969 to 1972 model years.

The second generation Chevy Blazer would span model years 1973 to 1991. The Blazer received the same restyling as the Chevy half-ton pickups. The full-length lift-off hardtop would soldier on through the 1975 model year when potential government rollover standards mandated GM make the roof over the front row seating fixed, but the rear portion of the top was still able to be removed for open air motoring. The tailgate glass rolled into the tailgate, since the second-generation hardtop redesign eliminated the upper folding portion. The Blazer could still be had in either two- or four-wheel-drive variants, but the majority came equipped with four-wheel drive.

Drivetrain choices for the second-generation Chevy Blazer ran the gamut from the standard 250 cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engines in the early offerings, to a 292 cube inline six, any of a number of Small Block V8s that included 305, 307, 350, or 400 cubic-inch variants. General Motors’ 6.2-liter Detroit Diesel V8 was available for a time. Six-cylinder engines were not recommended for towing duties.

Our feature 1989 Chevy Blazer is a time capsule, with only 21 original miles on the odometer. Finished in Metallic Gray over a gray cloth interior, it still has the original dealer plastic on the seats, and the original window sticker in still on the window. It is powered by the 5.7-liter gas V8 backed by a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission that feeds power to both axles. The Blazer is equipped with a tilt steering column, a Delco AM-FM radio, power windows, power locks, power steering, power brakes, cruise control, air conditioning, sliding rear side windows, front vent windows, a power tailgate window, a heavy-duty trailering package, chrome bumpers, and Rally wheels. The whole affair rides on 31 x 10.50 raised white-letter Uniroyal Laredo radial tires.

This remarkably original 1989 Chevy Blazer will cross the Mecum Auctions block at their Glendale, Arizona sale on Friday, March 21st.

  2. 20k invested in the S&P in 89 would be worth 865k now.

  3. “ Six-cylinder engines were not recommended for towing duties”

Know people who towed hard with both the 250 and 292, and like any good inline six the things held up.

  4. The market for these old K5 Blazers and Jimmy’s are continually going up. A brand new one would be extremely popular.

  5. That EFI 350 made a big difference and this would still be a good driver today.

Had one similar to this back in the day, but with a carb 305. Ugh. Looked sharp but the thing would downshift on a level road just to maintain speed!

  7. I had a 80 and an 89 like the one for sale. Neither ever left me stranded while offroading. Would love to have this one! I’ll bet it goes for 40-50 grand. I would like to know where it was sitting the last 35 years, and what was done maintenance wise.

  8. Outstanding truck. One of my all time favorites. This one has it all. Power everything, Air, 4WD, 350, great colour. My estimate is this one will get 80-100k. These are EXTREMELY sought after trucks. I wish I still had my 92 1/2 4WD 2DR Yukon GT. We all have regrets about the “nice” vehicles we once owned. Oh, the good ole days. My neighbour down the road has this very truck, in blue, and unfortunately he won’t sell it to me, or anyone……….Yet.

  9. This one will bring crazy money.
I would not mind having a decent one and put a 6.2 or 6.0 in it or even a 4.8 or 5.3 if you are chasing fuel economy.

  10. GM should bring a Blazer back on a HD2500 chassis with the DuraMax. It would be a huge success!!!
