Possibly in response to U.S. President Donald Trump mulling the idea of pulling the plug on the Biden-era federal EV tax credit and other electric vehicle initiatives, word has gone out from Wolfsburg headquarters that the Volkswagen ID.7 sedan will not be sold in North America as previously planned.
Volkswagen dealerships were informed of the changed plans in a recent email according to The Car Guide, with the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 – an upper midsize sedan – no longer scheduled to arrive in the U.S. or Canada at any future time.
Until recently, the Volkswagen ID.7 appeared to be lined up to compete against forthcoming midsize Chevy and Cadillac EVs. Its slick, streamlined design, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.23, would maximize range by cutting down air resistance. Tech includes a 15-inch infotainment screen, a panoramic smart glass sunroof, and a head-up display (HUD) with augmented reality.
At the time of its introduction in 2023, GM Authority speculated on whether GM would emulate its design features. General Motors references to planned “low-roof entries” added grist to the speculation. As with most EVs built on a dedicated architecture, the Volkswagen ID.7 is founded on a skateboard-type platform allowing for a flat floor.
Delays began to appear in Volkswagen ID.7 introduction last year, however. Even as more details emerged about the North American variant of the sedan – such as its pair of trim levels, the Pro S and Pro S Plus, and its 82 kWh battery standard battery – slackening EV demand caused Volkswagen to back off somewhat on its schedule.
The German automaker even remarked “as market dynamics continue to change, Volkswagen is delaying the introduction of the ID.7 sedan in the U.S. and Canada” at the time. The statement added that the company “is committed to making market-driven choices while listening to our customers.”
Meanwhile, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz van, based on the Microbus famously known as the “Hippie bus” and other titles in the Sixties, defeated the Chevy Equinox EV in the 2025 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year awards at the Detroit Auto Show.
The ID. Buzz and the ID.4 crossover will continue to be sold in North America despite the cancelation of the arrival of the Volkswagen ID.7 sedan.

This in my opinion has absolutely nothing to do with Trump or Biden or any politics at all.
VW makes probably the most inefficient and expensive EV’s by Legacy Auto.
This ID.7 would have been DOA on our shores at the price they were talking about.
The VW Group desperately needs an ALL NEW BEV Platform because MEB is borderline a joke!!!
VW is dying a very slow death and they might NOT make it.
They need a Jetta priced EV. I need a payment a little under three bills. Until then, my TDI At 50 MPG will do just fine.
