In the ever-evolving world of electric vehicles, the demand for the latest advanced features often drives innovation. No doubt, GM models like the Chevy Blazer EV provide a good example of this. That said, when it comes to the Chevy Blazer EV PPV, or Police Pursuit Vehicle, one particular omission from the standard Blazer EV proves that sometimes, simplicity is the better option.
Unlike the standard Chevy Blazer EV, the Blazer EV PPV is not equipped with a motorized charge port door. Instead, the PPV variant includes a manual charge port door that can be opened and closed without the need for motorized components. While this may seem like a step backward to some, the absence of a motorized charge port door has a few practical advantages, especially for law enforcement and first responders who rely on the PPV in extreme environments.
Although the standard Blazer EV’s motorized charge port door provides added convenience, it’s not without its flaws. In harsh outdoor conditions, such as freezing rain or snow, the motorized mechanism may fail or struggle to operate. For a vehicle like the Blazer EV PPV, which is expected to perform reliably in all conditions, a manual door is seen as the better choice.
To open the manual charge port door on the Blazer EV PPV, users simply press the fender cover and pull it away from the vehicle’s body, eliminating the possibility of a motor malfunction and ensuring quick access to the charge port. For most civilian EV buyers, the convenience of a motorized charge port door falls in line with expectations of owning the latest and greatest. However, for those buyers living in regions with heavy winters or challenging weather conditions, the manual setup on the PPV is likely more appealing.

I own a 2024 Blazer RS EV. The powered door is silly.
Related story. I once tried to open the trunk of a Buick Lacrosse in the winter. It clicked but it wouldn't open because ice and snow was wedged in the gap. To make matters worse there's no lip on this model to get your hands under to lift the trunk. Designers thought it would be cute if the lid lifted an inch on its own and then you opened the trunk, but that doesn't work when ice is present. Don't put the charger behind a motorized door that can't be easily opened.
GM's last real PPV was the 1996 Caprice.
Oh, I’ve got it…let’s put an electrically operated door on the charge port so, if there is a motor malfunction, a control problem, or any other mishap or I happen to run the batteries down, I have no access to the charger….
This is not a step back in any way. To me, it's a huge step in the right direction. Power operated charging doors are stupid.
We have two EV Blazers in my fleet at work, both have been in for motor door replacement already. One of them twice. This is a MUCH better option based on my personal experience.
And besides, it saves the cost of a motor and mechanism, which they will truly pass on to us……
Yes ditch the motorized door or make it an option for those who want it. You would think GM learned it lesson on the problems they had with the Volt early 2 or so years and went to a manual one like the Equinox has.
