While there’s certainly nothing wrong with a show-stopping build flaunting mirror-finish paint and an elaborate audio system, some vehicles are built with a different purpose in mind: driving enjoyment. This Chevy Nova follows the latter path, offering a no-frills, performance-focused build powered by a supercharged V8. Now, we’re getting a closer look thanks to the following feature video.
The story behind this build begins with Joe Whitney, an avid car enthusiast who purchased the stripped-down Nova for $3,800 after a previous restoration project was abandoned. Originally equipped with a stock 307 engine, Joe decided to swap in a 6.2L L92 sourced from a Cadillac Escalade and topped by an LSA supercharger, giving the Nova a total output of 557 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque at the rear tires.
Running on 91 octane pump gas, the build was completed with practicality and affordability in mind. Joe adhered to a $50,000 budget, performing the majority of the work himself, aside from things like alignment and some of the welding. The Nova’s suspension includes RideTech components with a four-link setup at the rear, as well as Detroit Speed mini tubs to accommodate sizable 315 rear tires.
Braking duties are handled by Wilwood manual brakes, delivering improved stopping power to match the car’s under-hood performance. Despite its formidable powertrain, the Nova retains a garage-built charm, prioritizing function over aesthetics. And at approximately 3,200 to 3,400 pounds, the Nova’s power-to-weight ratio is well-suited for enthusiasts seeking a thrilling yet manageable ride.
While the exterior sports a patina-rich finish that preserves its unique character, the interior is equipped with a few modern upgrades, such as a 12.3-inch Holley digital dashboard, a Sparco steering wheel, and Corbeau seats. Climbing into the hot seat, this Chevy Nova delivers a stiff yet responsive ride, which is ideal for spirited driving. The LSA-supercharged V8 provides a meaty dose of torque, while the precise steering complements the car’s performance focus.

I had a 1970 Nova with a 350 under the hood right from the factory. It was a great fast car lot of memories.
Too much patina! Needs paint, but otherwise WOW!
