Since 2010, Triple Eight Race Engineering has been synonymous with General Motors in the Australian Supercars Championship. The GM-backed outfit, which is arguably the most competitive team in Supercars today, made a surprise announcement on January 31st, 2024 – that it’s switching from GM and Chevy to Ford at the end of the 2025 racing season.
Previously, Triple Eight ran Ford Falcon race cars from 2003 through 2009 before swapping to the Holden Commodore in 2010. It became the factory backed Holden team in 2017 until the Commodore was pulled from the Australian racing circuit in 2022, years after GM shuttered Holden. In 2023, Triple Eight took up the reins of the Chevy Camaro, which itself has been discontinued, leaving the future of GM in Supercars up in the air.
Throughout 15 seasons with Chevy, Triple Eight secured eight championships and dozens of victories, including seven in the iconic Bathurst 1000. But it will begin running Ford Mustang GT race cars starting in 2026. Jess Bala, managing director of General Motors Australia and New Zealand, said that GM is extremely disappointed with the blindsiding news.
“GM has had a long and highly successful partnership with Triple Eight Race Engineering,” Bala said in a statement. “We share the disappointment with fans about Triple Eight’s decision, and the news that they will be moving to Ford in 2026. Eyes forward on the 2025 Supercars season – we look forward to extending our full support to all the Chevrolet Racing Camaro teams, for another year of on track success.”
Currently, Triple Eight fields three Chevy Camaro ZL1 race cars, piloted by defending champion Will Brown, Broc Feeney, Zach Bates, Scott Pye, Jamie Whincup, and Craig Lowndes.
With the loss of Triple Eight, it’s currently unclear what GM’s plans are for Australian Supercars racing. For now, GM-backed teams continue to race Camaro bodies, complete with Camaro branding – unlike their counterparts in North America’s NASCAR Cup Series, which feature Camaro sculpting but no Camaro script. Toyota is set to join the Supercars field in 2027, shaking up the manufacturer pool further still.

Absolutely terrible news. It’s a disgrace to say the least…
You can thank the big shots on top like MARY for dumping race cars
100%
Get rid of Mary. She’s destroying GM. Ford is out selling GM and the numb nuts running the General can’t see it. Looks like another government bail out coming. If I was a share holder I’d be pissed.
exactly..I’m a shareholder and stock hasn’t done #$%^&* in 20yrs and they still have trouble making the Corvette after 5yrs
WHY WOULD CHEVY BE PISSED??? They let Jimmy Johnson go with nary a word and he brought them 7 championships, grew up only driving Chevy’s and –boom, they let him go to the “other side”. All he asked for was information at the level Hendrick gets from Chevy. No word from Chevy Management, Mary or even the board.
Jimmie retired. He shacked up with a subpar team that is still not producing results. Why would Chevy have any reason to be upset he’s gone? He hasn’t done anything significant since, like, 2015.
I don’t blame them . Mary has ruined Chevy . The Cruze was a great commuter car 39mpg. And the Camaro was a great sports car for those who did not want a Vette. Teams want to drive a car with a name. I wonder what NASCAR is going to do ?
It seems like Mary is scared of ford. There was a time that anything ford does GM would do it better and vice versa. Ford has kept the Mustang and using traditional selling methods are becoming dominant in racing and sales to lower and mid class customers. Mary has gone a completely different direction and now the fans of GM are extreme upset. If this was a boxing match it would be Mary seen as running scared. Mary is a coward. A yellow no good for nothing coward. You need balls to run a multi billion dollar company and it shows she ain’t got no balls. She’s a week pathetic fool. If there’s no one else wanting to take over the reigns maybe ford should buy GM and bring back the well known brands we grew up with like Pontiac. Stop hemorrhaging GM Mary. We’ve all had enough.
Don’t become like chicken 🐔 little the sky is fallen Chevy still rules so don’t panic things will straighten out for Chevy 👍
Time to find a new team first they loose Shane now they defect to Ford what’s next Brock goes to open wheel and brown to NASCAR as well. Seems that supercars as a whole is failing even a v8 supra which itself not being a factory made that way they and the “new” point for the finals aka Playoffs which is NASCARs way of doing things they need new ideas.
