Supercars Chevy Race Cars Still Feature Camaro Branding

The Chevy Camaro spearheaded The Bow Tie Brand’s efforts in motorsports, represented on track in major series like NASCAR and Australian Supercars. Now that the Camaro is officially dead as a street-legal vehicle, Chevy elected to remove the model’s branding from its NASCAR Cup Series entries. However, it seems as though the Camaro name will continue to be used on track for the Supercars Chevy race cars Down Under.

The Gen3 Chevy Camaro ZL1 was introduced to Supercars as General Motors’ entry at the start of the 2023 season, replacing the Holden Commodore ZB, which had been a staple of the series prior to the discontinuation of the Holden brand. Interestingly, the Camaro made its Supercars debut well after the muscle car’s brief stint in the Australian market had ended. Holden Specialty Vehicles (HSV), which converted Camaro SS and ZL1 models to right-hand-drive (RHD) for local consumption, pulled the plug on the short-lived program in 2020.

The Camaro never returned to the Australian market, even when GM Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) took over for the now-defunct HSV. In fact, as of 2025, GMSV only imports two models from The Bow Tie Brand’s lineup for Oceanic buyers: the Chevy Silverado and the Chevy Corvette.

Even though it’s not represented in GMSV showrooms, the Supercars Chevy Camaro will continue to be raced. Much like in NASCAR, this model will serve as a representation of the Chevrolet brand as a whole rather than promoting a specific vehicle, although it’s certainly an interesting choice to leave the “Camaro” script on the race cars.

It’s unlikely that it will change anytime soon, either – even though some consider the Corvette a viable competitor in stock car and road racing, Corvette Racing has no interest in restarting its factory racing initiative. And even though Cadillac’s presence in Oceania is steadily growing, GM’s luxury arm likely won’t ever be represented on track as a Supercars entry, either. Instead, the Supercars Chevy teams will race the “zombie” Camaro for the foreseeable future, much like their North American counterparts in NASCAR.

  2. I fear once GM’s Formula 1 efforts are up and running, they will drop their remaining racing programs, ( including NASCAR and Supercars) in order to fund their Cadillac F-1 team

    1. Nope. GM will not turn its back on a massive marketing opportunity with Chevy Racing and let Ford and Toyota have it all.

  3. I once did a job for a man who was heavily involved in the development of Jim Hall’s Chaparrel race car. He said they used the Chevy ZL1 427 to power the little beast. It made a little over 400 H.P.

  5. Calling it a Camaro like most modern day race cars is a joke whether the car is in production or not. What is on that car that is actually used on a street Camaro.

  6. GM keeping the Camaro name alive in racing is just gaslighting so that when they slap that name on some pos EV and/or sedan/crossover you won’t blink an eye. Don’t fall for it.
