Some Chevy Silverado HD And Express Units Need A Power Steering Pump Replacement

General Motors has released a Service Update for certain units of the 2024-2025 Chevy Express van and 2025 Chevy Silverado HD pickup produced with power steering pumps that could fail prematurely. The bulletin expires at the end of the involved vehicle’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

Service Update N242485780 warns that an unspecified number some of Silverado HD and Express units may contain a power steering pump that may prematurely fail. It’s unclear what causes the premature failure.

A failed power steering pump would yield improper steering functionality, creating a safety hazard that could cause an accident.

A GM service department is to perform an inspection of the power steering pump on potentially affected Chevy Silverado HD and Chevy Express units. If a vehicle does not pass the inspection, the power steering pump must be replaced. If it does pass inspection, no further action is required.

The service update indicates that the 2024 and 2025 model years of the Chevy Express as well as the 2025 model year of the Chevy Silverado HD – in both 2500 HD and 3500 HD configurations – are affected by the issue. The 2024 and 2025 GMC Savana as well as the 2025 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD also figure on the list.

As a reminder, the 2025 Chevy Silverado HD is equipped with either the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine that generates 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, or the turbocharged 6.6L V8 L5P engine that develops 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Production takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan and in Crew Cab configuration at the GM Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada.

As for the Chevy Express, it’s equipped as standard with the 4.3L V6 LV1 engine that produces 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque, or the 6.6L V8 L8T engine with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet. Production of the Express takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, and Express Cutaway units are also built by Navistar at a separate facility in Ohio.

  1. Is there anything else that go wrong with GM vehicles constructed in the last few years up to 2025. I don’t no wether its the farming of parts out to every inferior parts maker from here to Timbuktu. Poor Quality control or whatever. It has to stop or this once great company is going to collapse in its own mismanagement. Ms. Barra is a complete failure and needs to resign.

    1. Yeah, and GM is about #5 or 6 on the list of most recalls, Ford being #1… EVERYONE is using foreign, CHEAP junk parts. I’m done buying new vehicles…

  2. That’s right quality is job 1, UAW is on the job. Gm needs to extend their warranties. Coming from a lifetime gm customer/fan with 3 in the garage now. Management needs to go.

  3. The article is scarce on the actual failure mode and also fails to mention that the pump also powers the brakes (unless this changed on the last redesign and is now done through electronics).

    The industry has been making power steering pumps for what now… 75 or more years? Having a hard time not picturing this as the low bidder saving 50 cents a unit by value-engineering the sh!t out it until the pump almost worked.

    1. Seems everything their putting on the vehicles these days is based on saving a few pennies. This is a dangerous way to make vehicles in my opinion.
