SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), General Motors’ second joint venture in China, has just surpassed 30 million vehicles manufactured while setting a new record in the Asian country.
The automaker announced having produced its 30,000,000th vehicle on Sunday, January 5th at its new Lean Intelligent Manufacturing (LIM) plant in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China, becoming the first Chinese-based automotive company to surpass that milestone, reaffirming the company’s industrial leadership. In particular, this outstanding manufacturing achievement highlights the fundamental role that SGMW plays in GM’s structure in China.
“The demand for new energy vehicles continues to grow, leading to changes and restructuring within China’s automotive industry,” said General Manager of SAIC-GM-Wuling, Lv Juncheng. “We are enhancing our core competencies across the board to remain competitive and implemented structural reforms to advance our new quality industrial chain, strengthening our brand through product innovation and channel construction to expand our market presence,” he added.
Specifically, SGMW’s 30,000,000th vehicle to roll off the production line at the LIM plant is a white-colored, all-new Wuling Starlight S with a range-topping fully electric powertrain. The joint venture held an official ceremony to celebrate the achievement at the Liuzhou factory, which is dedicated exclusively to the production of new energy vehicles (NEVs) for the Wuling and Baojun brands.
Founded on November 18th, 2002, SAIC-GM-Wuling has led China’s commercial vehicle market for the past two decades and most recently expanded its presence in the passenger vehicle market with the next-generation Wuling Global Silver model line. In fact, the brand represents GM’s largest EV production arm in the Asian country and has expanded its commercial footprint by exporting models outside of China under the Chevrolet brand.
The milestone of 30 million vehicles manufactured reaffirms the great importance of SGMW in the American automaker’s business strategy for both China and emerging countries around the world. In 2024 alone, more than 1.5 million SGMW vehicles developed and manufactured by the joint venture were sold worldwide, with Wuling strongly positioned as GM’s best-selling brand in the Chinese market.
