Production of the ninth-generation Chevy Malibu has ended, with the very last unit rolling off the line at the GM Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas last November. The Malibu was one of three ICE-powered GM sedans still available in the U.S., the other two being the Cadillac CT4 and the Cadillac CT5. Now, images of what is said to the very last ninth-gen Chevy Malibu built have surfaced online.
Images of the Chevy Malibu built were posted to social media, showing an RS trim painted in Radiant Red Tintcoat paint (paint code GNT). In the corners, we see a set of RS-specific 18-inch aluminum wheels (RPO code PZX) wrapped in 245/45R18 all-season tires (RPO code R0X). Other notable features include a set Black badges (RPO code B57), as well as Black front and rear bowties (RPO code B94), a chrome grille surround with Black grille inserts (RPO code GPW), a rear spoiler (RPO code T43), and dual polished exhaust outlets.
As a reminder, the ninth-generation 2025 Chevy Malibu features the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, rated at 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, with the GM E2 platform providing the underpinnings.
As GM Authority covered earlier this month, there are several thousand new in-stock Chevy Malibu units left on dealer lots. The vast majority of these are 2025-model-year vehicles, while roughly 12 percent are 2024-model-year vehicles. Nearly half are examples of the RS trim level.
The end of Malibu production also triggered a temporary layoff for employees working at the GM Fairfax production plant as the facility is retooled in anticipation of production of the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV. To note, the Fairfax facility also produces the ICE-based Cadillac XT4, although production is scheduled to end this month.
As for the Malibu nameplate, a GM Authority poll reveals that most fans would like to see GM refresh the sedan, while others would prefer a complete redesign.

SAD, just sad to see. I think why people like shoe-box sports utility vans, SUVs is because they are all the same square shape, in that way nobody has a better looking vehicle than their neighbors. Every body has the same.
People buy for utility anymore. They can hall more things easily in a CUV vs a sedan.
We were out and bought a piece of furniture. I did not have to go home and get the truck as the wife’s SUV carried it well. It also would never have fit my Malibu.
Furniture, kids toys, work items tables boxes etc they all fit. In my Malibu they don’t fit.
Styling has taken a back seat to being able to buy a vehicle that can no more and you can still afford it.
“We were out and bought a piece of furniture. I did not have to go home and get the truck”
Arguments people used to make for minivans, a market long since abandoned.
GM’s CUVs would be more palatable if they had V6’s and got better mileage. But $50k plus for 4 cyls and mileage comparable to a pickup? I don’t haul things often enough to justify that kind of compromise.
Disagree Honda , Toyota , Kia are still selling sedans at high rate
exactly. Its called Marketing. GM Needs to tell their guys “get to work”. The same happened when they walked away from Saturn. Great car, but they put no money into it and tanked alot of dealers. By the way my GM stock hasn’t moved in 18yrs. That tells ya something about the CEO and the board.
Saturn was never a great car!!! Did you ever drive one??? Never see any on the road anymore and its not because they are collector cars!
If you haul stuff often, a CUV, SUV, or pickup makes sense. If it’s occasional, try paying for delivery or renting.
Or get a hatchback. Compact hatchbacks from Honda, Mazda, and Toyota are surprisingly roomy. Sadly, to get a big one requires buying an Audi or a Tesla, but they are flexible and handle like cars rather than trucks. The Buick Regal was a nice one, as was its wagon variant, but alas, it’s gone.
My 2018 Regal TourX (wagon) is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned…….if GM had put any money into promoting the Regal sedan and TourX they would have been much more successful. GM had better turn their marketing around….the only vehicles that I have any interest in are the Tahoe and Silverado’s…….ordered a 2024 Camaro that they never built……..Customer doesn’t seem to matter to GM any longer.
Malibu actually was picking up sales and becoming popular but then they stopped offering it with decent engines choices…. like the 2.0L…. and then just had the anemic 1.5L. no one wants that configuration besides rental companies.
Easily could’ve had a full line like the outgoing regal.
I’m sure Honda and Toyota are grateful for the lack of competition in the mainstream sedan market.
Honda and Toyota sell their models globally where more sedans are still sold. Chevy does not have this advantage. So there is no real money in these cars here vs what people are really buying.
Really? Look at GM models in Mexico and in Central and South America. Plenty of sedans.
This was a great car. Good looks, reliability, and longevity. Perfect for first time buyers. GM let the price creep up to the point where it was no longer was competitive. Could have easily laced number 2 or number 1 in sales with the correct market strategy.
I worked at a Chevy dealership in 2017 when this generation first came out, they haven’t updated anything besides the front fascia.
I purchased a 2024 Malibu RS just like this and it is a nice car with amazing fuel mileage. I would have preferred an Impala but sadly they are no more. One of my son’s is looking to replace their 2013 Camaro with a higher end sedan but there is nothing in the GM line as he refuses to purchase an EV until the problem with batteries are completely resolved. Looks like he is buying a BMW, sad to say.
og no bmw please no they are si ugly
saythe guy to prefer buy a caddy ct something it s sedan
If he needs to go BMW, tell him to lease a new one, then return it while it still has warranty.
Old adage still applies: “If you think a new BMW is expensive, try owning a used one!”
EXACTLY! LEASE IT AND THEN RETURN IT!
“Sadly” is right. Wait until he discovers the cost of parts and labor on that Bimmer. Shocking ! Wondering if BMW has corrected their well-known tendency to leak oil from multiple areas yet ?
What a shame that GM is dropping the Malibu. I felt the same way when Ford stopped making the Fusion. I have a 1500 diesel for hauling stuff but my all wheel drive turbo Fusion that is my company car is great on the highway. I had a Malibu before the Fusion and it was a great car. The 2016 Fusion has 120;000 trouble free miles. My company has gone to Kia SUV’s now. I’ll keep the Fusion as long as they will let me.
It is sad. Personally, I will not buy from a company that uses imports, even if assembled in the US. Show up in a Taco or Tundra then get the hell out of my driveway. The same for Kia.
Ford’s “grinding noises are normal” transmission killed the Fusion.
GM’s tiny 4cyl and CVT-only transmission killed the Malibu (though this is more from GM’s “torture it to death” policy like they’re doing with the Express).
Sad end. Now what competes with Honda and Toyota sedans.
chinese cars there are lots of interesting chinese sedans but they are EV no ethanol or hybrid so we here have to avoid,,,
The Malibu was a great car. It’s sad to see that the auto industry has turned toward ugly SUV’s that ALL look the same. Today’s auto’s are trying to be too “futuristic” and all look like sh*t! No personality whatsoever in their designs, just a bunch of unreliable electronics & plastic. BTW, they’re contributing to human cancers with all the plastic BPA’s emitted through the HVAC systems evey second you’re driving one. They’re all a bunch of over-priced PLASTIC JUNK! They’re made like chinese toys…just throw them away and get a new one when they break. That’s EXACTLY what the automakers want…
ohhh the chromes of 1960ies… tht was the real futurustuc cars until today…. there were stylists today there is only computer people
👍👍👍👍😥😥😥😥😥
well… when we bought our last car it was in 2013. we looked for a sedan we could pay, so the dacia logan or FW vita… ppreferred the vita automatic, but with no option until € 9000 we haad to get the dacia sandero… we though in green, but they did not offered neither today, we are not in north america so we can not buy eah car each month like you guys do… and this dacia is my 5th car and probably is my last one in life, today after 3 or more year not going to a mall nearby. we had today to, tobuy a stove, unfortunate all in steel, not in white, so we took an ugly stove design but is what industries offer. among all cars seen in street, just 1 was a wonderful greenm a mercedes old. all rest is black. silver grey and few white or reds, so understand the history those malibus well with the new generations.
in brazil they GMB offer nly onix sedan the design of china which comes now a facelift and after none sedan…. too… they bring the finished project wuling of china a SUV EV for some 500000 money
Best coment of this thread.

Good. Finally they discontinued it. Now if they could do the same for EV’s and bring back the 7th Gen Camaro.
WHY IS GM NOT BRINGING BACK THE SO-CALLLED MUSCLE CAR’S, IE: CHEVY NOVA, CHEVY IMPALA, CHEVY MALIBU, MONTE CARLO ETC ETC!!!!!! THOSE ARE THE CARS PEOPLE REALLIY WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT TO MENTION THE PONTIACS, BUICKS OLSMOBILES. NOT THIS JUNK GM SELLS TODAY!!! ALSO WE NEED “V8” ENGINES!!! THATS WHAT THE PEOPLE REALLY WANT, NOT THE 4 CYLINDER JUNK MOTORS.
trump will finally make tha happen.
Mary doesn’t understand the impact of legacy models and well-established names. They mean nothing to her.
Insanely short-sighted, oblivious, arrogant, or all of the above…..but stupidly ‘all in’ on the EV side of things.
Isn’t she due for another meaningless automotive award heaping blind praise on her?
How do they keep her there? What has she done for GM except get rid of all the cars!👹👹👹👹👹👹
How many times has this nameplate come back from the dead. It will be back some day.
As another unwanted EV.
This model would have done wonders with a slight redesign, keep the same platform though throw in a new interior as well as front and rear fascias…BUT! profit margins reign king over keeping a legacy going.
In this case, it’s not so much profit margins as being arrogantly blind to the fact that EVs are unwanted but they still go that way anyway. People need to be fired and the stock market needs to wake up to that fact. NOW.
A PATHETIC decision by GM that will result in a loss of around 100K units, that a lot of folks should be immediately terminated for, including Mary. Ford blew it by dropping the Fusion and GM chose to arrogantly ignore that in favor of unwanted EVs. Don’t let the door hit you all on the way out.
Guess they won’t be running the Malibu in NASCAR next year. 🙄. I mean, they killed the Camaro too… What’s left? Maybe the Trax or Equinox or the Blazer……
Jesus palomino! It’s RED, Rudy!

This car should be totally revamped to compete with the competition. There should be a variant with at least 300 hp available, and it should be built in America by Americans. Build it good enough that people buy it instead of the Asian imports!! Make America Great Again!!
I work in the service department of a dealer, these little 4 cyl turbo engine’s are junk, if they make to 100,000 plan on replacing it one way or another. And don’t get me started on the CVT transmissions. Funny that now some of the manufacturers and going back to a traditional transmission again.
Just another miscue by GM, building electric scrap metal that no one wants or are buying. The market now belongs to the Koreans and Japanese that still give buyers a wide choice of gas powered cars and SUV’s and aren’t wasting money and time on garbage nobody’s buying.
Love the red color. I love my malibu I have. my husband traded it for a truck. I got a used Camaro now. Vehicles are too high price now.
The Chevy Malibo is one of Chevy best looking vehicles for families that don’t prefer an SUV. It’s a waste. For me, I like the bigger SUV as my preference. I have a 2010 Cadillac Escalade and I love it but I wish I could make a deal with GM to drive these vehicles and get people to buy them and show them off. If I had the money, I would have them all. The Yukon, the Tahoe, and just show them off because they are all beautiful.
Great comments!
EVERYTHING toyota makes is UGLY and STUPID
Our 2016 Malibu has well over 100k miles and running strong. I would buy another if they still offered the 2.0 turbo. I don’t care for the current 1.5 turbo with the CVT transmission, GM is offering too many vehicles with only one engine choice. The same factory in KC puts the 2.0 LSY turbo engine in the Cadillac XT4, both are built on the same assembly line, why not offer the engine upgrade for the Malibu? I guess when everything is an EV it won’t matter, but that’s going to be a couple of decades before consumers make the transition. Domestic brands better be glad they can still make enough profit to survive selling gasoline powered vehicles. Don’t cut corners on either, it’s going to get very competitive! I love my Bolt, but the Malibu is a great alternative for long distance trips. Ironic KC stopped production of the Malibu to build the new 2026 Bolt.
Another model bites the dust…along with full size extended cab pickups and Sonoma/S10 family… what’s next GM??
What in the hell is GM thinking???? If they are worried about money makers, then GM should stop throwing money down a hole in the EV market. Put some money into redesign of the Malibu and ICE and keep some competition in the auto industry against the imports!!
Please no CVT’s as very Stupid! No wonder they weren’t selling! Plus no engine choices! Bring back the Buick 3.8 L V6
With RWD and AWD optional!
Also a sporty 2 dr Coupe version should sell as no sporty cary like the Camaro is offered. A hatchback should help it sell!
We had to buy a 2025 Malibu because our 2 Cruzes were getting up in age. Great looking. Don’t like the CVT but oh well. Dumb GM for dropping both Malibu and Generation 1 Cruze.
What ruined this is car is when they forced upon consumers the 1.6 liter engine and CVT combo. My wife has a 2020 Premier with the 2.0 turbo and 9 speed auto, with 260 hp it’s pretty quick and fun to drive. 2022 was the last year for the 2.0 liter turbo.
I spent well over a month in a rental 2023 LT and really enjoyed it overall save the rather noisy engine on cold mornings and gM’s insane packaging. Why the lower tier cheaper RS gets a leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter but not the higher end pricier LT defies logic. Most everything else about this car was great. True the CVT took getting used to and had a little shudder on occasion but it did make for very efficient MPG. And for those claiming the 1.5 is anemic I say BS. That little engine was surprisingly quick and responsive, charged right up the steepest hills effortlessly and passed on two lane roads without strain. The only weakness was foot to the floor at high speeds saw the engine running out of steam slightly. It was best just giving it half throttle. This car like the Camaro and Impala deserve much better treatment. If gM was bringing this car back it would have been announced by now
Aside from its off-putting face, it’s a good platform. It’s a midsized car that weighs 3000 lb. Toyota sells 300k Camrys per year. Be in it to win it, not just a union make-work project.
I’ve always thought that the Volt was too small to be useful. Put Voltec in the Malibu with an Atkinson cycle engine. A 17 kWh battery is around $3k now.
My 1.5L 2024 Malibu has plenty of power, I never worry about it. Some comments above were mentioning the loss of the 2.0L and I am sure it was faster, but I find the 1.5 to be plenty. BTW, owned 2 Saturns, an original 4 door, and then one of the 3 door coupes. Sure they were not super cars, but I put over 90,000 miles on one of them with the only problem being the ignition lock recall…
Sad indeed. As already said, it’s all about marketing. I was stunned recently when I went to my local Chevy dealership to order a new Stingray, stunned when I saw the Malibu there at how great it looked, how comfortable it was to drive (took a test drive anyway) –plus impressed at the build quality. And it was priced below 30K! A frigging bargain. And just beautiful. Yes, I prefer cars, had my time with family and SUV’s, and this Malibu should still be selling out. Marketing is the key! Pump the excitement, pump the pricing, pump the test drive! It’s GM’s own damn fault.
So what is happening with that car? Heritage Center? Fleet Sale? Dealer Stock?
Despite being a great car at introduction, GM does what GM does and let their cars rot on the vine by not keeping them competitive. Even after all these years, the basic Malibu design still looks great and has a decent interior. Lately American automakers are too quick to give up on cars when they realize they can’t compete or think they can make more money on trucks and SUVs. Not everyone who bought cars wants a crossovers that are neither efficient or fun to drive. I’ve long given up on the so called Big Three. Honda and Toyota build more cars in America than Ford or GM do and they have much better resale value due to a long history of quality.
Another moronic decision by Mary ,,don’t worry Mary i will be driving a ice sedan Honda
