Here May Be Why Your Chevy Trailblazer Shift Lever Is Noisy Or Vibrates

You may notice a condition in your 2021 through 2023 Chevy Trailblazer in which you hear tapping or rattling in the center console or instrument panel area, or may feel rattling or vibration in the shift lever, while driving the vehicle.

GM has identified a potential source for this problem in the Chevy Trailblazer, along with a remedy GM service technicians can attempt to get rid of the unwanted noise and/or vibration. The site of the problem is shown in red below.

The shifter cable in affected Chevy Trailblazer units may be in contact with components inside the vehicle’s structure. This causes vibration of the cable, caused by normal operation, to be transmitted into the vehicle’s structure or shift lever, with the noise or vibration you are noticing as the result.

GM service technicians should inspect the shifter cable of your Chevy Trailblazer to see if it is in contact with internal parts it should not be touching. If it is, insulating the crimped metal sleeve on the shifter cable should be carried out in an effort to eliminate the sound and vibration.

An article on the GM TechLink website cautions that the service personnel shouldn’t use zip ties or other attachments to fix the shifter cable in place. In order to function correctly, the cable needs to be able to move freely. Additionally, the noise may be made louder or the vibration more intense if foam tape is applied to the “large round dampening weight” on the shifter cable.

Notably, the 2023 model year of the Chevy Trailblazer has two different drivetrains available. The GM continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is paired with the 1.2L LIH engine, while the GM nine-speed automatic transmission or the CVT may be utilized with the 1.3L L3T engine.

The two powerplants mentioned above include the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine developing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine cranking out 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque.

Beneath the sheet metal skin, the Trailblazer rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set. The North American variant of the crossover is produced at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea.
