Here May Be Why Your Buick Encore GX Shift Lever Is Noisy Or Vibrates

If you notice a rattling sound from the center console area of your 2020 through 2023 Buick Encore GX, or a vibration in the crossover’s shift lever assembly while driving, GM has identified a potential cause for the issue.

The image below from GM shows the places where the vibration or noise may occur in the Buick Encore GX, marked in red on the image.

Areas affected on the Buick Encore GX.

The cause identified for this rattling or vibrating issue in the Buick Encore GX is the shift cable touching components within the vehicle that it should not be in contact with. To see whether this is indeed the cause of the problem, GM service technicians should inspect the crossover’s shifter cable.

If the shifter cable is found to be in contact with any internal parts or surfaces near the areas indicated, the crimped metal sleeve around the cable should be insulated. The update also indicates several things the technicians should avoid doing. These include tying the shifter cable to internal parts – the cable must be able to move freely in order to work – or covering the large round weight on the cable with foam tape, which will likely increase the noise or vibration rather than stopping it.

As a reminder, the 2023 Buick Encore GX is equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) in FWD configuration, or the GM nine-speed automatic transmission in AWD configuration. The GM TechLink site does not specify if the problem affects one or both of these transmissions.

Motivation for the crossover is provided by one of two powerplants, the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, or the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine developing 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque.

The Encore GX is underpinned by the GM VSS-F vehicle set. Production of the U.S. model takes place at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea while the Chinese market variant rolls off the assembly line at the SAIC-GM Dongyue South plant in China.
