Pickups like the GMC Sierra 1500 are designed for versatility, particularly when it comes to hauling cargo. But as the old saying goes, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. A recent viral video demonstrates this idea perfectly, capturing a GMC Sierra 1500 hauling a precariously stacked vertical load of lumber and flirting dangerously with disaster.
The short clip, posted to social media, begins on a busy highway filled with fast-moving traffic. At first glance, everything appears normal, until we notice a peculiar sight: a towering stack of lumber extending upwards from the bed of a GMC Sierra 1500. The planks appear to reach an astonishing height, possibly upwards of 25 feet, and are balanced vertically as the truck navigates the highway.
The danger of this setup is immediately obvious. As the video continues, the Sierra approaches a large steel gantry used to suspend overhead traffic signs. The lumber stack looks perilously close to colliding with the steel structure, a mishap that could result in catastrophic damage, not only to the truck, but also to surrounding vehicles and highway infrastructure.
Thankfully, the lumber narrowly clears the gantry by what appears to be inches at most, avoiding what likely would have been an absolutely devastating accident.
Interestingly, a grey Acura can be seen following tailing the Sierra throughout the video, following just off the pickup’s bumper. While the reason for its proximity remains unclear, some online commentators have speculated that the Acura driver may have been shadowing the Sierra in hopes of capitalizing on a potential accident, possibly as a means for an insurance payout.
Whatever the case, the Acura’s positioning only adds another layer of danger to the scenario. Luckily, the video ends without incident, but the takeaway is clear: check your load and transport it the right way.

The amount of sheer ignorance of some drivers is beyond comprehension. The article talks about it hitting the overhead signs. What about power lines?
The ignorance here and with so many unsecured loads on the roads should scare everyone. These s**t for brains drivers are all over the place. They should be arrested and license taken away.
To quote a famous philosopher, “Stupid is as stupid does”
Yes power lines. Overhead fiber optic cables as well.
So gamble millions in liability and possible prison time, over getting $200 in lumber someplace? Hardly seems worth it…
Texas….. Imagine that!
That is amazing. How stupid can a person be. This is beyond comprehension
George Carlin once said,
‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.’
3 Words: GET IT DELIVERD.
Upwards of 25 feet? Hardly. I’d bet it was less than 20. Still a bit high. I’ve hauled some pretty long loads sticking out the back, 20’ lumber in a 6 foot bed, or a 25 foot ladder once. But that was only a few miles out in the country on back roads. I wouldn’t do it standing up and I wouldn’t run highways with it, but it looked like it would clear most any power line, just tear down communications lines. Good way to get in quite a mess.
