General Motors has just officially announced that it has started local production of the all-new 2025 Chevy Optra sedan in Egypt.

The automaker announced the formal start of production of the all-new 2025 Chevy Optra sedan at the GM 6th of October City plant in Egypt, reinforcing the company’s assembly line and production structure in the African country. GM’s local subsidiary says the new 2025 Optra is the result of a historic investment in passenger car manufacturing and will consolidate its strong leadership in the Egyptian automotive industry.

“In line with Egypt’s vision to develop the local automotive industry, at GM Egypt, we have invested over $20 million to enhance our local manufacturing capabilities by adding new equipment and technology,” said Managing Director at GM Egypt and North Africa, Sharon Nishi. “This includes a new, innovative error-proofing technology to cater to the new passenger car program to ensure further safety and quality,” she added.

The first retail units of the all-new 2025 Chevy Optra are already leaving the production lines at the GM Egypt plant and will begin to be distributed in the Chevrolet dealer network in the coming weeks. The 2025 Optra includes a high level of locally sourced components, which has strengthened the relationship with local Egyptian supplier partners and reinforced GM’s production structure in that country.

Designed as a fuel-efficient vehicle with enhanced safety and user-friendly technology, the new 2025 Chevy Optra addresses the Egyptian market’s growing demand for reliable and economical cars. In fact, the 2025 Optra became the first domestically produced vehicle to emerge from the government’s Automotive Industry Development Program (AIDP) with GM Egypt being the first company to register under this initiative.

“This collaboration reflects our strong partnership with the Egyptian government toward enhancing the automotive ecosystem, promoting sustainable economic growth, and creating new job opportunities in the country. In fact, GM Egypt has increased its manufacturing workforce by almost 30 percent to support the new passenger car program and growth plans,” Nishi finished.

  1. Ford should learn from Chevrolet that NOT EVERYONE needs trucks or SUVS.
And yet here they are, discontinuing the Focus in 2025….leaving only the Chinese Taurus.

Sadly Ms Mary B ALSO WILL NOT UNDERSTAND.

    1. No kidding. I have a cousin who works for a Ford dealer, and everyone in the family felt obligated to buy a crossover or an F-150. I know for a fact that some of the truck owners never haul anything more substantial than groceries.

I think most of the truck owners never haul anything more substantial than groceries. Especially the half ton four-door short box trucks. Are just a less embarrassing replacement for the soccer mom van.

        1. Not everyone has to over compensate and try to prove their manhood by driving a 3/4 ton or dually they actually use once a decade. Some also buy what works for their use and fits in their garage. Buy what fits your usage .

      1. In developing countries such as Costa Rica and many places in South America, compact cars are the way to go. Especially in small countries
An S10 Colorado is stretching the limit.

There is a reason why the Aveo is offered in these countries. If I remember correctly, Chevrolet also offered Kei cars in Japan at one point, but chose to enlarge the Wagon R based vehicle it had….

      2. As someone with a 1500 with the standard bed and a sedan. I would rather drive my sedan almost always. My truck is used as a truck. Even if I’m grabbing 10′ PVC or a couple pc of wood half the time I just take the car and fold the seat down lol. After driving my truck for like a week or so full time once I’m back in my car I feel like I’m driving a Corvette lol

Although I do wish I had a crew cab standard bed. But those are impossible to find bc most people buying crew cabs are just going to Starbucks and throwing a bag of mulch occasionally in the bed…

  2. Interesting tidbit of info regarding GM’s efforts around the world. I wonder if the Optra will be marketed elsewhere in Africa and the Middle East.

    1. seems an easy outdated style and simple sedan, then the response is most to remain in Africa, to saudis and not to cross sea for us here or for the UAE ones

  3. This car, the S10 Max, the Onix, the Monza, and the Tornado van should be made in or sold to GEM countries as value tiered vehicles utilizing gm’s global manufacturing locations.

  4. Many customers, including myself, are begging for GM and the other domestic auto companies to make a vehicle like this for the U.S. market. It should be made preferably in the USA. Not everyone wants a pickup or an SUV. People on a tight budget need basic transportation like this vehicle. I wish car companies would get their heads out of the sand and realize this.

    1. Joseph Panozzo,
I’d like to see them do that also. GM is well aware that there is a large market for basic vehicles. They don’t want to make them, because they make very little money on them. It is easier for them to sell the big money makers then to sell 3 or 4 basic vehicles for the same profit. GM makes all their money on big vehicles that come loaded with options. The only reason GM kept the S-10 pickup truck around so long was to help them out with their CAFE numbers.
GM seems comfortable ignoring the economy vehicle market in the United States.
This is typical of GM. They don’t want to sell you what you want. They want to sell you what they want. GM is not the only Vehicle manufacturer doing this. Maybe the vehicle manufacturers figure that if people need a less expensive vehicle they should go out and buy a used one. That is sad, if that is their thinking.

    2. It’s collusion. If manufacturers built small “affordable “ sedans, their profit margins would be much more minimal with these products. In Canada (apparently soon to be the 51st state 😡) a Hybrid Civic “made in Canada” is $ 40K. It’s out of control because people still buy overpriced new vehicles regardless of the interest rates. So even when manufacturers are selling less total vehicles by the numbers, there are producing higher profit vehicles.

  8. Maybe with the relaxed rules GM will dump the variable displacement and stop using those damm collapsible lifters on the 5.3 and 6.2. Funny how during covid a lot of trucks were sent out without the chip to drive the system. I actually got a $50.00 REBATE because my truck didn’t have it.

    1. But everyone here wants it! Until it’s offered here, then every single one would find a reason not to buy it.

  10. History repeating itself. I remember in the early seventies when the Toyota Corolla was in high demand because of it’s price, reliability and fuel economy. The American three automotive companies quickly had to chase the market because consumers wanted and needed such a vehicle. GM always seems to be the bride’s maid and not the bride.

    1. And 50+ years later, those cars still aren’t profitable to build in union plants and sell to frugal customers who expect everything for nothing. Like it or not, car companies are businesses. Toyota takes advantage of cheap labor and non-union plants, and even still, the corolla is just as expensive as the Ford Maverick or Chevy Trax.

      Reply
      1. You hit the nail on the head… it’s not mostly the components that make the prices so high…Mostly the cost of labor and unions is why Americans pay so much…..Also the lower paid non union workers seem to put more pride in whatever they are making…Just look at how much more durable and longer lasting a Toyota is over the pinto or the Chevy Trax

  11. So, GM just KILLS the U.S. made Malibu Sedan that was reliable and somewhat affordable and begins shouting how they are building an affordable, reliable sedan in distant Egypt after abandoning the North American market……genius, sheer genius.

  12. I wanted an affordable small sedan. I’ve been GM all of my life, but don’t want a turbo engine like in the Malibu nor do I want an expensive gas guzzling truck/ SUV. So I went with a Nissan Sentra and love the car, the MPG is fantastic! It was totaled after a deer encounter and I went right out and bought another Sentra. I have found a new brand to be loyal to and GM has lost a customer forever… good job GM.

  13. Thank God you survived the deer encounter…In a sentra pray you never encounter anything bigger….like maybe a truck ?

  14. A lot of people have travel trailers boats snowmobiles which compact cars can’t haul. Unfortunately most new cars if they can haul a trailer the transmission will last about 15 minutes that’s why a lot of my friends have trucks yes they do carry their groceries in them but they haul trailers a lot.
