The GM Factory Zero plant is on a temporary production pause. The pause began on January 2nd and will continue through February 3rd.
“Factory Zero has paused production from January 2nd, 2025 to February 3rd, 2025, for planned upgrades to the paint shop to support future production,” a GM spokesperson told GM Authority.
Also called the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant, it was built in 1911 as a Dodge factory. It reopened in 1985 as a General Motors facility and was retooled as an EV plant in 2020. The first EV it produced was a GMC Hummer EV in December of 2021, and it’s since been the home of the BT1 platform, which comprises the Chevy Silverado EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and GMC Sierra EV, in addition to the Hummer EV line. It will also produce the Cadillac Escalade IQL when its production begins.
In other recent GM EV production news, we reported in December that the Ultium Cells battery plants are still not running at full capacity despite a significant increase in EV sales in 2024. General Motors CFO Paul Jacobson said in a conference call that the Ultium Cells plant in Warren, Ohio, was running at 80 percent capacity, and the Ultium Cells Plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, was running at a mere 40 percent.
This low production capacity for EV batteries was likely the reason GM decided to sell its stake in the Ultium Cells Lansing battery plant to joint venture partner LG Energy Solution. The facility is nearly complete, and the automaker says it expects to recoup its investment. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2025, while LG Energy Solution will provide immediate access to the facility to install new equipment.
As for the next phase of The General’s EVs, the Cadillac Vistiq and the aforementioned Cadillac Escalade IQ are expected to begin deliveries in 2025. The next EV unveiling we’re expecting from GM is the next-generation 2026 Chevy Bolt EV, which will be underpinned by the Bolt’s old BEV2 platform, but with updated motors and batteries. The Vistiq will be produced at the Spring Hill facility in Tennessee, and Chevy Bolt EV production will take place at the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas.

“As for the next phase of The General’s EVs, the Cadillac Vistiq and the aforementioned Cadillac Escalade IQ are expected to begin deliveries in 2025.”
The Escalade IQ already began deliveries back in December.
The Optiq has also already started deliveries in the last week or so.
So under “what’s next” we have the Vistiq, Escalade IQL and Lyriq-V under Cadillac.
Chevy has the FWD and SS trims of the Blazer, as well as more configurations of the Silverado. (And of course the Bolt sometimes in the second half of the year.)
Finally GMC has the Elevation and AT4 trims of the Sierra.
Sure 😉 now that future production is the next gen Camaro V8 right???
GM never used the old Dodge plant. It was demolished in 1981 to make room for the GM plant.
Does GM Authority have any information on the Samsung joint venture battery plant planned for New Carlisle, IN. It is a bit baffling they sold the plant in Lansing, so why would they build another one from scratch?
