The Ford Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover disliked by some Mustang purists as a significant deviation from the heritage of the famous pony car, managed the feat of outselling its ICE Ford Mustang counterpart in 2024, at least in terms of units sold.
As reported by our sister site Ford Authority, the gasoline-powered Ford Mustang lineup sold a total of 44,003 units during calendar 2024.
Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang Mach-E racked up a total of 51,745 units sold, or nearly 18 percent more vehicles during the same period. The ICE vehicle saw its sales drop by approximately 9.5 percent compared to 2023, while those of the Mach-E skyrocketed by almost 27 percent year-over-year.
Pricing helps to explain the surge of the Mach-E’s sales over those of the traditional Mustang. The Mach-E got significant incentives during the 2024 sales year, though it doesn’t qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit offered on various EVs. Meanwhile, ICE Ford Mustang trim levels saw a price increase across the board, with MSRP rising anywhere from $1,400 to $3,650 compared to 2023 prices.
The change in sales flipped the relative positions of the Mustang and the Ford Mustang Mach-E compared to 2023. During that year, the ICE car sold about 19 percent more units than the EV crossover. Both experienced low single-digit growth in 2023, a far cry from the dramatic upswing in Mach-E sales during 2024.
For a rough equivalent among GM vehicles, the now-discontinued Chevy Camaro sold 31,028 units during calendar 2023, its final full year of sales. The approximate counterpart to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the sporty Chevy Blazer EV, sold nearly a third less vehicles even in 2024 at 23,115 units.
Notably, though, the Chevy Blazer EV was subject to a stop-sale order during the first part of 2024 related to GM dealing with a software quality problem. Sales of the electric crossover only resumed in March, raising the possibility it would have seen sales totals closer to those of the Camaro without the disruption.

Hardly surprising considering there were rows of Mach E’s and literally no ICE Mustangs sitting on the lots for most of 2024. Add in insane incentives plus the 7500 tax credit and dealers were really pushing these things whenever I was approached looking at vehicles.
In August, The Mustang saw a 54% increase in sales from the same month in 2023 so the idea that the Mach E outsold the Mustang because there is little to no inventory of the latter is just not true.
Customers apparently see more value in the Mach E.
Yup as I stated above they were practically giving away the Mach E’s as they were piled up on every Ford lot I went to over the summer months. Throw enough discount money on anything with 4 wheels and it will sell eventually not to mention the tax incentive for 7500 bucks! Take away both of those things and lets see what sells better
Reading comprehension here is deplorable. The Mach-E does not qualify for the $7500 tax credit. Glad to see that Ford has a successful product in the Mach E. Sport coupes are just not as popular as they once were so this shouldn’t be that surprising. And it doesn’t call for such blatant apologizing. If you don’t want to drive an EV then don’t. Go buy an ICE Mustang and stop crying. Leave the rest of us alone.
Your spot on..
I’ve owned both, currently mach-E GT much zippier and faster than the V-8.
Wow, lots of downvotes for an honest personal opinion backed by inside knowledge of the topic. I guess, positive opinions not in line with the EV haters beliefs, should be not expressed here.
Ford could utilize the S650 platform giving Lincoln the 4-door sports sedan: Lincoln LS, Continental LWB and Mark9 but that will never happen.
No it sold because it has a hatch and back seat. These two cars share a name but nothing else. One is a low volume coupe and the other is a daily truckster.
Good point. Compact and medium SUVs far outsell low slung coupes in this day and age.
And loosing money on every one!
It’s not your business if they are losing money on the Mach-E unless you are a Ford stock owner which I doubt is the case. If you are in the market for one, it’s in your advantage if not, you have plenty of choices from GM.
An electric car with 4 doors IS NOT a Mustang. It is a disgrace to the MUSTANG name. Call me old (82 and I ordered my Mustang convertible with 289 210 HP & 4 speed on April 16, 1964) but that’s worse then putting the Cadillac emblem on a pickup truck.
@Jerry,
“An electric car with 4 doors IS NOT a Mustang.”
Why?
It’s a new variation of the mustang brand. So does the engine size make it a mustang or the speed or the performance or the power? Some of the ICE mustangs of the past were pretty poor at all of this.
So when they stop making ICE mustangs the brand will just have to die with it?
If you have to ask “Why” you will never understand.
Jerry, you are spot on! I currently own a ’66 convertible. Ford should have come up with some other naming strategy for the EV. For the record, I am not an EV hater. I think that EVs are the future.
A mustang is a horse, not a two door coupe. Ford can and will use the name as they please. You should get over it. So many sticks in the mud here smh
And just how many 2024 Mach-Es will cross the auction block at Mecum’s in 30 years ? Likely to be repurposed as some other type of appliance while low mileage ,survivor 2024 Mustang Dark Horse hammers down $150,000.
The real question is; which was more profitable?
Bingo !
