Production has ceased for the 2025 Chevy Malibu, and GM is figuring out what to do with the rest of them. In the U.S., they’re sitting on dealer lots, waiting for new owners to buy them, but GM is doing something a little different in Canada.
Rather than offer them to retail customers at dealerships, the 2025 Chevy Malibu is a fleet-only vehicle. As of this writing, several thousand 2025 Malibu models are for sale at U.S. Chevy dealerships, but none are available at Canadian dealerships. The 2025 Chevy Malibu doesn’t show up on the Chevy Canada consumer site, but curiously, it also isn’t available on GM Envolve Canada’s website. It still shows the Malibu as a 2024 model.
“As consumer car-buying habits in Canada have changed and are moving away from cars and towards SUVs, the 2025 Chevrolet Malibu will only be offered in Canada for fleet purchase,” a Chevy spokesperson told GM Authority. “The Chevrolet portfolio demonstrates that we continue to identify what is important for Canadian buyers and bring vehicles to market to meet their needs in the industry’s most popular segments, such as the Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer.”
So, any average Canadian driver who was really hoping for a 2025 Chevy Malibu is out of luck. They’ll have to settle for a 2024 model, which marks an end to Chevy sedans in Canada.
The General’s decision to discontinue the Malibu remains controversial with many aficionados of Bow Tie cars. GM Authority listed the axing of the Malibu as one of the five biggest failures of GM in 2024, given that the sedan was GM’s fifth-place bestseller across all of its core brands, including Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Buick. The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to sell briskly, proving the sedan body style isn’t yet dead among popular vehicles.
The GM Fairfax Assembly plant where the Chevy Malibu was produced until it was discontinued last November is currently being retooled to manufacture the next-gen Chevy Bolt EV. Around 680 workers are temporarily laid off until the retooling is complete and production recommences.

past decades, fleet customers are tend to find sedans. Malibu’s discontinued will be sad happen to them, and leak of GM’s market share.
Are these cars even profitable? I see them being discounted for under $20k.
Where GM gets their info that people don’t want the Malibu (or Impala) is BS. Those of us who have dealt with surveys, statistics, or consultants reports know that any report can and will be developed to project or give the results that you want. It goes on everyday. Consultants make their living writing BS reports for anyone and will design the content to the preset results. Consultants are in a position to never be held accountable, but always available to pick up and cash their pay cheque. And what is just as bad, is that some people believe and act on those reports.
