The Chevy Silverado line of full-size trucks – which includes the Light Duty 1500 series, Heavy Duty (HD) line, and Medium Duty (MD) trucks – were flat at 552,836 units, remaining the Bow Tie’s volume driver. Meanwhile, sales of the Chevy Colorado midsize pickup jumped 38 percent to 98,012 units, and those of the all-electric Chevy Silverado EV light duty full-size truck added 7,428 deliveries to the bottom line.

Chevy sells more Silverados than Colorados, with the midsizer accounting for just 15 percent of Bow Tie brand’s truck deliveries. However, the Silverado full-size truck line offers a wider spectrum of price points, cabs, beds, capacities and capabilities, including light-duty, heavy-duty, and medium-duty models, plus an all-electric model.

Sales of Chevy trucks with 658,276 deliveries in 2024 didn’t match those of its closest rival, Ford, which posted 942,996 combined combined of the full-size Ford F-Series – which includes the light duty F-150 and heavy duty Super Duty – the Ford Maverick compact pickup, the Ford Ranger midsize truck, and battery electric Ford F-150 Lightning light duty full-sizer. Notably, GM has no answer for the Maverick compact model.

Overall, GM trucks cumulatively commanded a 35 percent segment share, accounting for over a third of all deliveries in this large and profitable space. Ford took second at a close 33 percent, exactly a third of the market. Chevy represented 23 percent of GM’s 35 percent, followed by Ram at 14 percent. GMC and Toyota represented 12 percent each. Notably Toyota sells more examples of the Toyota Tacoma than the Toyota Tundra – the only automaker that sells more midsize trucks than full-size ones.

The pickup truck segment expanded 2.6 percent to 2.9 million units during the 2024 calendar year, meaning that the five percent growth rate in Chevy truck sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Sales of the Chevy Silverado range were down ever so slightly during the 2024 calendar year, making no headway over the previous year. That said, 2023 was an extremely strong year for the Silverado as GM reaped the benefits of expanded production at the Oshawa plant.

However, the Colorado saw very healthy growth during the year after availability of the all-new, third-gen model stabilized. Additionally, the Silverado EV is slowing gaining traction in the marketplace; the all-electric truck will launch more trim levels in 2025, which should spur growth.

The good news is that overall sales of the Bow Tie brand’s trucks outperformed the segment average. The marque offers a highly competitive and broad lineup that it has upgraded and expanded over the last couple couple of years, with variants and capabilities to meet nearly every need and want in the market.

Even better news is that combined sales of all GM trucks surpassed one million units, outselling key rivals in terms of both volume and growth rate. The GMC Sierra saw a very healthy growth rate of 9.2 percent, while the Canyon grew at an even faster clip than its corporate cousin, the Colorado. The Sierra EV is still pretty new in the market, and the model will see expanded availability and more trim levels in 2025, likely resulting in higher volumes.

The General and Chevrolet begin the new year in a very strong position, with a strong truck lineup, the production capacity to make the vehicles, and the dealer network to sell them.
