Chevy Silverado Best-Selling Full-Size Pickup In Australia In 2024

The Chevy Silverado has long been a favorite among American truck buyers, but it’s also making waves overseas. In fact, during the course of the 2024 calendar year, the Silverado became the best-selling full-size pickup in Australia. Chevy took the title from Ram after the sales for the latter brand nosedived.

Looking over sales figures for the 2024 calendar year, General Motors sold 3,862 units of the Chevy Silverado in the Australian market. That number includes sales for both the light-duty 1500 and HD models. The Silverado narrowly edged out Ram, which sold 3,852 units during the same period.

Ram, which had dominated the market for nearly a decade, saw its sales decline sharply last year after leading the segment with 6,833 units sold in 2023. By contrast, Chevy Silverado sales have grown consistently over the last few years, growing from 2,118 units sold in 2021. The Silverado’s upward trend continued with 2,389 units in 2022 and 3,365 units in 2023, finally reaching 3,862 units in 2024.

In the light-duty category (1500 models), Ram maintained its lead, selling 3,239 units in 2024 compared to 2,389 units of the Silverado 1500. However, a few other contenders have entered the fray, including Ford, which moved over 2,000 units of the F-150 in 2024 following a difficult launch in 2023. Meanwhile, Toyota’s Tundra is still in its early stages, selling 469 units after trialing a small batch of vehicles in 2023.

Back in 2020, GM opted to axe the Holden brand and replace it with GM Specialty Vehicles (GMSV), focusing on high-margin, low-volume imports like the Chevy Silverado and Chevy Corvette. Under GMSV, the Silverado is converted to right-hand drive for sale to Australian buyers. GMSV also offers a range of accessories for the Silverado, further enhancing its appeal to customers seeking a customizable, premium pickup.

While Chevy’s victory in the full-size segment is significant, the competition is only intensifying. Ford’s entry with the F-150 signals growing interest in full-size pickups, and Toyota is slowly building momentum with the Tundra. It remains to be seen how these brands will fare as we move into 2025.
