2025 GMC Terrain Elevation With Black Edition Package: A Closer Look

General Motors pulled the sheets on the 2025 GMC Terrain last August, debuting an all-new generation replete with updates and changes. Among the highlights is a new exterior design with a more truck-like appearance, as well as a completely reworked cabin and a host of new tech features. As expected, GMC offers customers several options to customize the 2025 Terrain to their liking. Now, we’re taking a closer look at one of those options, namely the Black Edition Package.

The exterior of the 2025 GMC Terrain.

As the name suggests, the Black Edition Package (RPO code WJP) adds a variety of black-themed components to the exterior of the new crossover. The Black Edition package is only available for the Elevation trim level, while pricing is set at $895.

The Black Edition package includes the following content (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):

  • 19-inch high gloss Black aluminum wheels (PJO)
  • Darkened grille and ‘C’ shaped surrounding bezel
  • Black mirror caps
  • Black roof-mounted side rails (V2P)
  • Black exterior accents
  • Black exterior badging with Red GMC lettering

In terms of availability, the Black Edition package can be paired with all six paint colors offered for the 2025 GMC Terrain Elevation. Further visual differentiation can be had with an Ebony Twilight Metallic painted roof (RPO code 94T), which can be added to five of the six available exterior colors, while the Sterling Metallic painted roof (RPO code 26R) can be added to the Ebony Twilight Metallic paint option (paint code GB8). Each of the painted roof options adds $495 to the bottom line.

Without the Black Edition package, the GMC Terrain features bright chrome detailing on the grille that surrounds the red GMC logo at the center. The silver trim accents and alloy wheels further enhance its polished look, lending a classic and refined aesthetic. The rear design integrates a clean tailgate layout with red taillights and silver lower trim elements.

By contrast, the Black Edition package replaces the polished elements with blacked-out details, including the grille, window trim, and the wheels. The darkened accents lend a stealthier vibe to the crossover. Note that the Terrain featured here is covered in Rapids Metallic paint (paint code GAL).

As for what’s under the skin, the 2025 GMC Terrain is motivated by the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, while the GM D2 platform provides the underpinnings. Production takes place at the GM San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.

  1. Black Editions are now so old-school. This looks awful and so “we’re over it”. BUT those wheels on the “without” are pretty cheap-looking.

  2. Looks horrible!

  3. Looks better without. And I love the base 17″ wheels, they are well-detailed. River Rock with black roof is my color scheme of choice on the Terrain.

  4. It just looks cheap.

  5. Why does General Motors always try to do something different from the established control standards? That fuster-cluck of an
absolutely unintuitive “shifter” where the wiper controls should be is a multi-car class-action lawsuit waiting to happen. And the lack of mirror turn signals is an absolute no-sale. GM is a joke.

  6. Why offer only the crap 1.5L engine? My 2019 Equinox Redline with the 2.0 is sporty and zooms. My son’s Malibu with the 1.5 is weak and lacking for even that car. I can’t imagine that weak engine in a much larger SUV.

Personally I prefer the blacked out editions but I’ll never purchase anything with that single weak engine option GM. I considered a 2025 Terrain until I found this out that yet again only the weak engine is available. Prob have to get a Blazer instead with the V-6.

    1. I had a 2018 Terrain 1.5T, and now a 2022 Terrain 1.5T. I’m completely satisfied with this engine. It’s no powerhouse, but it performs exceptionally well around town and on the freeway. Furthermore, the 1.5T has an excellent reliability record. JD Power rates the Equinox and Terrain Most reliable SUVs in class. I think the majority of people will be very happy with this car. Of course, there will always be those few who need more power. Anyway, the 1.5T is not a “crap” engine; it’s just not what you want in a car.

      1. I was concerned the 1.5l was not enough but after renting a 2024 1.5l on a trip I was completely satisfied. The torque makes it more than sufficient for city driving and highway merging.

  7. I have a 2020 Terrain with 2.0L Turbo. Did a test drive of 2024 with 1.5L, WEAK! Why did GM
stop with the 2.0L Turbo? Wouldn’t purchase this vehicle with 1.5L. Sad.
