Watch A GMC Hummer EV SUV Get Carved Out Of Wood: Video

Bringing together longstanding professional woodworking techniques and a salute to the cutting-edge electric vehicle tech of the GMC Hummer EV SUV, a skilled woodworker has made a large scale model of Big Red’s famous sport-utility with outstanding results.

Thanks to the Woodworking Art channel on YouTube, we get an inside look at the creative process leading to this eye-catching wooden recreation of the GMC Hummer EV, which starts out as just a few blocks of wood.

As the video progresses, the builder starts by roughing out the body of the Hummer EV using a template to draw the shapes correctly, then cutting these out of the wooden blocks using a bandsaw. More shaping and fitting is done with a hammer and chisel as well as other power tools, getting the pieces to lock together snugly.

Proper angles to match the sheet metal bodywork and sculpting are cut and sanded. Soon, the recognizable shape of the Hummer EV begins to emerge from the raw wood. Router, chisel, and drill are put to work creating the front grille area, including separate wooden tow hooks carefully attached to the front fender area for a fully authentic look.

Discs of wood are turned into tires through deft application of a Dremel tool cutting wheel, slicing the precise pattern of grooves that looks like the tread blocks of a genuine tire. Smaller discs get the intricate spoke pattern of modern Hummer EV wheel styles cut into them using the drill and router, then get fitted into the wooden “tires” for the proper roller look.

Seats, a dashboard with an infotainment screen and steering wheel, and a chassis all emerge as if by magic from the fine-grained wood. The body is added and the woodworker demonstrates that it will actually roll on the wheels. Separate doors get fitted, transparent sunroof panels and window glass made from smoke-tinted plastic are added, a roof rack gets installed, and the polished wooden Hummer EV SUV is ready to roll.

You can watch the whole process in the following video, accompanied only by the sounds of tools in action, some beeps and other traffic noises for atmosphere, and a bit of music at the end while the gleaming, superbly finished Hummer EV is shown off by the justifiably proud creator:
