Sub-$40k Tesla Model Q Reportedly Coming In 2025

According to an X post from the Wall Street Journal’s Becky Peterson, an affordable new Tesla model could be on the way as soon as the first half of 2025. If the rumors are true and the report is accurate, the upcoming Tesla Model Q will compete with affordable GM EVs like the Chevy Equinox EV and the next-gen 2026 Chevy Bolt EV.

The information comes from a copy of a report from Deutsche Bank. According to Peterson, Tesla Investor Relations boss Travis Axelrod met with Deutsche Bank for its Autonomous Driving Day in New York last week. The report shows that “the new Tesla model” is internally being called “Model Q.”

When the Tesla Model Q launches next year, it’s expected to have a starting MSRP of $37,499, which would put the price tag for most at just under $30k if the $7,500 federal EV tax credit is still alive by the time it comes to market. The report also says the Tesla Model Q will be built on Tesla’s existing production lines.

This report comes after a Q3 earnings call in which Tesla told investors a more affordable model was coming in the first half of 2025. The EV brand also said it would lower the prices on its existing lineup and eventually introduce robotaxis, which we got a glimpse of at Elon Musk’s “WeRobot” presentation in October.

It’s unclear whether the Tesla Model Q (which is just a codename for now) will be a clean-sheet design or built on a modified version of the platform that underpins the Model 3 and Model Y. It’s also unclear whether it’s a car or a crossover.

As for GM’s affordable, mass-market EVs, the 2025 Chevy Equinox EV boasts a base price of $34,995 before any incentives kick in. Meanwhile, a next-generation Chevy Bolt EV is coming for the 2026 model year. It will be built on the BEV2 platform that underpinned the Chevy Bolt EUV but with modernized, Ultium-based motors and batteries. GM said the new Bolt will be the most affordable EV in the United States when it comes out.

  1. So it should be here by 2030?

  2. Funny. I actually thought of an idea of an affordable Tesla Model Y like vehicle that uses cloth seats (not the stupid “vegan” seats), and instead of all the dumb gimmicks like farting horns, dog mode, sentry mode (although I do find this one useful), and just had the basics (AC, FM radio, and bluetooth), would have been an excellent addition to their lineup.

  3. Probably fake news. How many times do we need to hear about an upcoming Tesla that never arrives?

  9. The model Q looks far better than the Bolt. I owe an Opel Ampera/Chevy Volt and I will never trade it for a Chevy Bolt. I´ll do it for a Model S. Not everybody like SUV´s or crossovers or is willing to buy one no matter what.
