Silverado EV, Sierra EV: One Thing That These Electric Pickups Desperately Need

The all-electric Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV offer a range of interesting features, including a brand-new design, inside and out. Sitting inside these two pickups, passengers would be hard-pressed to miss the massive pane of glass positioned directly above them – in fact, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV are the first GM full-size trucks to include a fixed glass roof. However, this fixed glass roof comes with one glaring omission – literally.

While the fixed glass roof adds an upscale and open feel to the cabin, it also lacks a retractable sunshade. As pointed out in our hands-on interior tour of the Silverado EV RST (click play on the video above), the lack of a sunshade could potentially create some issues in sunny conditions. Although the glass is UV-treated and tinted, it will likely continue to allow substantial heat and light to penetrate into the cabin.

As a result, this design oversight could lead to a substantial increase in cabin warmth, especially when parked in direct sunlight. Consequently, drivers are often forced to turn up the air conditioning, which in turn drains the vehicle’s battery and reduces overall driving range. Not only that, but the glass roof can also create significant glare when the sun is positioned at certain angles, further distracting the driver and vehicle occupants.

A sunshade in the Chevy Silverado EV, a feature also present in the GMC Sierra EV.

Although a sunshade might seem like a small detail, it would address all of the issues listed above, blocking sunlight and reducing the temperature in the cabin, thus decreasing a reliance on air conditioning and preserving the vehicle’s range, all while mitigating glare and enhancing overall comfort.

Looking ahead, we think GM should offer an adjustable sun shade option that gives users more control over their cabin environment. Many automakers already offer sunshades with their panoramic roof systems, balancing the benefits of natural light with practical considerations, and we think the feature is a good fit for the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV as well.

What do you think? Should GM make this upgrade a priority? Let us know in the comments!

  3. Saw one of these at my local dealership. 98k. No thanks. How about you build an affordable truck or car for that matter. While there are some fools who will buy one, I think these trucks will be collecting dust on dealership lots

  5. I put 5% tint across mine the first week. I can still see out but the sun doesn’t bother me anymore. In Texas the sun can get rough. Just a bad idea to leave uncovered.

  6. Ya gotta wonder what these engineers are thinking today. There are other nuances on other EVs they seemed to have made mistakes on if one believes owner complaints. i.e. is the Equinox EV reflection that bad on the winshield and if it is who was test driving this stuff before it made production to not see it or do mules not have final parts together the engineer might be tweaking and driving. In any event a final production model should have been driven for some period of time to experience what a buyer would.

    1. It’s not the engineers that make the call it’s the bean counters. $$$$$$$$ cut what we can!!!!!

  7. They need double the range, especially when towing & a lower price

    1. How would you suggest they do that? They already have enormous, heavy, expensive batteries. Adding more would increase the weight, which is already enough to limit that range.
There is a point of diminishing returns with an EV, and a pickup truck demonstrates that perfectly.

  8. No matter how much tweaking GM does it’s still a turd! I lived in Dubai for many years and these EVs will not be able to handle the heat. Temps on asphalt can reach 145 degrees and the sun would absolutely cook you with the glass ceiling. You need more then a shade, you need insulation as well.
These EVs are not for extreme hot climates.

  9. Can they at LEAST make the front of the truck LOOK like a regular Silverado? Wheather that be with 3-D paint/air brushed or decals … just something to make it look like a normal grille. I liked my 2012 Avalanche, and this EV reminds me of that truck, although not quite as good looking. I think the front of the Cadillac EVs, and maybe the Volvo EVs are the only ones I can stand the front grilles of. Everything else is OBVIOUS that it’s an EV, because there is NO AIRFLOW opening anywhere. And WHY does EVERY manufacturer need to put so much lighting on the front of the car to make sure you KNOW it’s an EV from a mile away? I’ll know that when I pass it’s whisper quietness compared to the nice V-8 rumble spewing from the quad tips on my Pontiac G8 GXP (slightly modified)! Then again, I don’t hear much else from any car when I get on the throttle come to think of it.
