General Motors has expanded a recall for an unlatching tailgate issue affecting certain units of the Chevy Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks to tens of thousands of additional vehicles, with the majority in the U.S., and close to 20,000 in Canada.
This is the latest expansion in a series related to Safety Recall number N232426400, with hundreds of thousands of pickup trucks in North America now included in the recall action.
The General first recalled the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks in February 2024, with 2020 through 2024 model years included. Initially, 128,966 Chevy Silverado HD and 194,226 GMC Sierra HD units were thought to be affected by the tailgate issue, for a total of 323,232 trucks. A total of 222,490 trucks from both nameplates were also recalled in Canada.
However, by March, the number of recalled vehicles soared to 819,566 trucks, including 311,368 Chevy Silverado units and 259,066 GMC Sierra units in the USA and 249,132 Canadian pickups. The latest expansion in early December has 66,669 Silverado pickups and 65,368 Sierra units added to the total in America, with 18,010 more in Canada.
As a reminder, all affected units are equipped with the manual tailgate with power lock and release (RPO code QT5). The issue arises when water, such as rainwater, infiltrates the electronic gate release switch of the tailgate and short circuits it. This causes the gate to become unlatched while parked, and then flop open while the truck is being driven along the road.
A temporary fix is available to owners by checking the tailgate to ensure it is latched each time before they drive. The remedy that will be applied to affected Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD units involves dealership replacement of the exterior touchpad switch
assembly. This fix is available at no cost to the owner.

I am not sure, but I would also say that there’s a good chance that , at least a few of them are accidentally hitting the tailgate button on the inside without realizing it. I know, I have done it a few times
My tail gate opened sometime during the nite and hit the overhead door, not knowing this I hit the opener for the overhead sounded funny when I walked around the back of the truck I saw all the damage my door did to the tail gate. Will this be a covered repair also. ( the damage to the tail gate from the door ) ?
I would seriously doubt that GM would cover it. Good luck though.
They will not cover it IF something was done to it. If it is a defective tailgate that is a hazard, then lemon law is the only way forward IF A DEALER cannot fix it…
This fiasco+ 10 speed is VERY DISAPPOINTING. They should FIX it by the end of the generation AT LEAST….
Thanks Fain.
I had at least 6 (I lost count) switches replaced on my 2022. I bought a 2024 and sure enough the tailgate still has the indentation on the top with the drain holes. Knock on wood, I haven’t had any problems on my 24. Maybe they changed the design on the inside because on the 22 the water from the drain holes ran right on top of the switches. If GM were to ask me I would say delete the indentation altogether. I never use it to open the tailgate.
This is the last thing I want on my tailgate is the powered option. Locking I am good with as I always try to lock it with thefts and rather it still be there and have to push a button (or insert a key) to unlock it. But the powered tailgate it absolutely silly and all the problems just show that.
Ford has had an issue with the tailgates opening on their own or not opening. This isn’t an SUV tailgate that is protected from the weather and outdoor elements or abuse, it is a ridiculous place to have a powered option. I will remove and sell my powered tailgate for a manual one when it comes time to replace my truck as currently only powered up and down or the multiflex tailgate are options.
I would be ok with a manual multiflex tailgate if they ever develop that. Though I have heard crap gets in to all the crevices of the inner gate causing problems and I dump stuff in my bed at times (dirt, mulch, rock, etc). Just give me a manual regular tailgate with a lock and I am good, save the fancy tailgates for those who don’t need or use a truck. The last thing a contractor wants is his truck bed full of expensive tools to open and dump down the highway or there for taking in a parking lot. GM and others need to know their crowds, the work truck guys weren’t asking for unreliable powered up and down tailgates with only a button to open and close…
I wonder what makes these 2500HD tailgate switches different from 1500 switches.
