GMC Sierra, Yukon Brake Pads May Wear Prematurely

GM has issued a preliminary service bulletin for several vehicle models across three of its core brands, which may be affected by a problem with premature brake pad wear reported by owners – including the 2019 through 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck, the 2021 through 2024 GMC Yukon, and the 2021 through 2024 GMC Yukon XL.

The brake pads in the affected units may wear down so quickly that only a few thousand miles of driving is enough to wear out the pads completely, per information in GM Preliminary Bulletin number PIT6134E.

The rapid wear on the brake pads of affected GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL vehicles occurs especially when the brakes get unusually hot. These times include, according to the bulletin, when the pickup or SUV is driving in the mountains, or during repeated stop and go driving in dense city traffic.

The reason for the excessive brake pad wear has been traced to the material recently introduced for making the pads by General Motors. The material was formulated to reduce brake noise, but appears to be extremely like to wear very quickly as well. GM indicates that a large number of vehicle owners are reporting the issue, which led to the automaker investigating.

There is no current long-term fix for the problem because the only brake pads GM has available as replacements are the same ones wearing out quickly as a result of their material characteristics. The engineering team at the automaker is working to create a new material for the pads that will be much more durable and long-lasting.

The service bulletin will be updated with a remedy once the GM engineers complete the new pad material development. A sufficient number of new pads will also need to be produced to cover the GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, and other vehicle units affected by the issue.

GMC units are not the only vehicles affected, with models from Chevrolet and Cadillac also subject to the issue. However, the fast-wearing brake pads seem to be used only in vehicles sold in the North American market.

Pickup trucks and full-size SUVs are the only vehicle types that seem to be affected by the problem.
