GM And LG Energy Solution Extend Partnership To Develop Prismatic Battery Cells

General Motors and LG Energy Solution have announced an expansion to their existing battery technology partnership to include the development of prismatic battery cells. The new prismatic cells will provide the power in future GM electric vehicles, while simultaneously diversifying the company’s supply chain, as well as its portfolio of battery chemistries and battery form factors. In addition, the new prismatic cells are expected to reduce EV weight and costs, as well as simplify manufacturing processes.

Prismatic cells are characterized by a flat, rectangular design housed in rigid casings, offering significant advantages over other battery formats. Their compact structure enables more efficient packaging within EV battery modules, contributing to reduced vehicle weight and cost. The simplified assembly process of prismatic cells further optimizes production efficiency, making them a compelling choice for next-generation EVs. LG Energy Solution offers experience in prismatic cell production, as well as a portfolio of patents in battery design and manufacturing,

GM currently produces pouch-style cells at its existing Ultium Cells facilities in Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, providing motivation in models like the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevy Blazer EV, Chevy Equinox EV, Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EV.

GM vice president of battery cell and pack, Kurt Kelty, highlighted the broader impact of the partnership, noting that it has already created thousands of advanced technology jobs in the U.S. and supports GM’s diverse EV offerings. Wonjoon Suh, executive vice president of LG Energy Solution, expressed enthusiasm for the expanded collaboration, emphasizing the shared vision for innovation and leadership in the EV market.

As GM Authority covered previously, General Motors recently announced that it will sell its stake in the Ultium Cells battery plant in Lansing, Michigan to joint venture partner LG Energy Solution. The facility is nearly complete, and General Motors says that it expects to recoup its investment in the facility.
