Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Traverse sales placed the Bow Tie’s three-row crossover into third place among 14 entries during Q3 2024 when ranked by sales volume, up several spots from the previous quarter.

The Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) kept the lead as sales jumped 25 percent to 41,996 deliveries, followed by the Honda Pilot in second with a 38 percent uptick to 36,832 units. The next four entries were all relatively close, each with roughly 28K sales. The Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales) moved up to third place in spite of a 12 percent dip to 28,390 sales. The two models from the Hyundai Motor Group took fourth and fifth, respectively, with the Kia Telluride posting a two percent dip to 28,054 units and the Hyundai Palisade with a 44 percent jump to 28,045 units. The VW Atlas placed sixth with a 13 percent bump to 28,041 units. Meanwhile, the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales), the Traverse’s corporate cousin, took 11th as sales slipped six percent to 14,455 deliveries.

Notably missing in the running is the first-ever Toyota Grand Highlander, one of two entries from Toyota. In spite of previously taking the market by storm since its introduction just a year ago, sales disappeared this quarter after a stop-sale order and production shutdown over the summer due to a recall involving a faulty driver’s side curtain airbag. Consequently, the model fell from third place to land next-to-last – just ahead of the discontinued Mazda CX-9. Meanwhile, the “regular” Toyota Highlander took eighth, posting a five percent decrease for 17,179 deliveries.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap in price or seating capacity with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse and Acadia, which are generally smaller but often cross-shopped with them, and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating are sold at a price point similar to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and GM’s own Chevy Blazer.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models are sold under the same name but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automakers, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take

While Chevy Traverse sales performance continued the year’s negative trend during the third quarter of 2024, the model did jump to third place in the rankings for its best showing in quite some time. We expect Traverse sales to improve in the coming months and quarters as consumers become more aware of the all-new model, which launched for the 2024 model year.

About Chevrolet Traverse

This past summer, GM revealed the next-gen 2024 Chevy Traverse, introducing a design that evokes “a rugged, ready-for-anything presence” along with a fully overhauled cabin with a “best-in-class” 17.7-inch diagonal color infotainment touchscreen. Furthermore, the vaunted GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance feature will be available for the first time ever on the Traverse, thanks to the adoption of GM’s new Global B electronic architecture, plus heated windshield wipers.

Four trim levels are currently available for the all-new 2024 Traverse, including LS, LT, and RS, plus a new off-road-focused Z71 trim for the first time on the large three-row crossover, marking it the first unibody vehicle to wear the Z71 badge. The first-ever, off-road-capable Traverse Z71 offers better approach and departure angles, with its new capability demonstrated in videos recently released by GM.

Meanwhile, the Traverse RS features unique taillights, which are clear instead of red. The 2024 Traverse standard wheels have an interesting pattern.

The next-gen 2024 Traverse offers a single powertrain choice. The all-new turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine develops 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, representing an additional 18 horsepower and 60 pound-feet compared to the outgoing 3.6L V6 LFY engine – an impressive 22.5-percent increase in peak torque. Yet, the maximum trailering rating for the new Traverse stays the same at 5,000 pounds.

The 2024 Traverse’s front wheels are driven by an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. All-wheel drive is available as a “regular” system on all trim levels, while the Z71 trim level exclusively sports an “off-road-capable” twin-clutch system.

The 2025 Chevy Traverse adds a new High Country trim level after a one-year hiatus, which is missing three key features, and drops the entry-level LS trim, while offering a new Z71 Adventure Package. Furthermore, the 2025 comes with fewer standard safety features, with some now optional.

Production of the 2025 Traverse began in October.

  1. Beat the Telluride and Palisade. Those are two quite remarkable vehicles out of the Koreans too (never discounted) and Traverse beat them. Well done Chevy!

Although I guess I can’t say I am surprised. I long said the 3-row fullsize epsilon twins (Traverse and Enclave) were comfortable enough in the third row to sit a short adult comfortably. Its a nice crossover with near minivan like comfort.

  2. The truth is the demand for the Traverse is magnitudes higher then the supply, the only reason that this isn’t #1 seller is that GM didn’t build enough of them to meet the demand.

  3. And we all know why, it was GM’s stupid decision to offer an unpopular engine with no other option. Dumb move GM, we told you so but you thought the young female exec who made/defended the decision knew best. She may be smart but she doesn’t know the customers. Same with issue with the 1.5 only Equinox. You gave up lots of sales on that one too. Is she still employed?

    1. I 100% agree.
I was really interested in the refreshed Traverse until I heard about the engine choice.
That is a big vehicle for a 4 cylinder.
I decided to wait for the refreshed Tahoe with the 3.0 liter diesel in it.
A lot more money, but I keep my cars for 15 to 20 years so I want them to last.
With the turbo kicking in all of the time to move the Traverse around and the high engine revs, I don’t see how it can last.
It will be bought by the thousands by the rental car companies who only keep them 2 or 3 years.

      1. Do you not understand that it isn’t engine size but how it is built? They can just as easily under-build a big cube V6 that won’t last as long as a small displacement turbo 4. No one has any problems with the 2.7 in the F150 because it is a 6 but the Silverado it is all wrong in a pick up. This 2.5 is overbuilt like a diesel. The 2.7 was one of the hardest to kill in torture testing from the engineers, zero problems it won’t last and probably outlast the problem filled 3.6 it replaced. It has plenty of power and way more torque which is exactly what you want in a vehicle this size…

      2. Then try your hand at the XT6… Blazer also has, but is too small I believe for you…
The 2025 model has a V6…still. But it will be killed off, better try one

Also # 1 in subcompact crossovers (Trax) and #1 in full size SUVs.

    3. Doesn’t know her customers? You so called car guys don’t know the buyers. Let me drop a little knowledge on you, families and moms normally don’t know the engine size and power of their CUV’s, that isn’t a car guy type buyer. The 3.6 before was good right? Guess what, this has a bunch more power in all the right spots and better mpg. The highly held Toyota has a turbo four with way less power as its standard engine. This vehicle is sitting 3rd in its class. The Pilot is in its first full year after a redesign and the Traverse in it the midst of its redesign, there will be downward overlap as things switch over. Either way, Mary has brought GM back as much as you don’t like that a woman is doing a good job. The Equinox is also a top seller in its class and they are bringing a Hybrid. You people just can’t be happy. They could stuff a V8 in it and hold 60% market share you you’d think of something to complain about and say a woman shouldn’t run an automotive company. Drop it all ready, it is getting old…

      1. True equality means not pulling out the gender (or any other) card to mask managerial incompetence. Barra is a mediocre CEO at best and she’s been in that position for too long (8 years is about average for a CEO reign). Until people judge a manager- or any other position- by performance- we will never achieve true equality.

The ONLY reason she does not have her way is because of Mr D. Aldred and M.Reuss…
