Chevy Silverado Turns 50

GM is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Chevy Silverado pickup truck, taking a look back at the name’s many accomplishments and innovations over the years.

The Chevrolet Silverado initially launched as a trim option in 1975 for the C/K Series trucks. Known for its upgraded appearance and comfort features, it set the foundation for Silverado’s evolution. In 1999, the Silverado nameplate was introduced as its own model, bringing industry firsts like standard four-wheel disc brakes and innovations such as a stronger three-section frame and an AutoTrac 4WD system. It was also highly recyclable, with 89 percent of the truck produced using recyclable material.

The 2003 model refresh introduced notable advancements, including being the first full-size crew cab pickup with a four-wheel steer system, which enhanced maneuverability, especially while towing. It also debuted premium comforts like dual-zone climate control and a Bose audio system.

The 2007 second-generation Silverado became the industry’s first hybrid full-size pickup, offering improved fuel economy with GM’s Two-Mode Hybrid system, along with innovations like a new fully boxed frame and upgraded V8 engines.

In 2014, the third generation delivered segment-first safety features such as Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, as well as 4G LTE Wi-Fi in 2016. This generation also marked the 100th anniversary of Chevy Trucks with a Centennial Edition in 2018.

The current generation launched with the 2019 Silverado 1500, introducing a wealth of modern technologies, including a segment-exclusive power tailgate, hands-free trailering via Super Cruise, and the MultiFlex tailgate. It also boasts best-in-class capabilities like cargo volume, fuel economy from the 3.0L I6 turbodiesel Duramax engine, and other advanced driver assistance features.

Now, GM is once again reinventing the nameplate with the launch of the 2024 Silverado EV, offering up to 492 miles of range, four-wheel steer capabilities, and 10,000 pounds of towing. The Silverado EV also offers a Mid-Gate feature, which enhances versatility by extending cargo capacity into the rear of the cabin, when needed.

GM also notes that Chevy has sold an estimated 500,000-plus units of the Silverado every year for the last quarter century, and that for every $1 in added value generated by the Chevy Silverado, an extra $2 is created for the U.S. GDP.

Looking ahead, we expect the next-generation ICE-based Chevy Silverado to launch in 2026 for the 2027 model year.

  1. In my opinion, the pick of the litter is the GMT800 platform. Definitely, the most reliable. Chevrolet needs a limited edition regular cab, shortbed, Silverado with a 6.2 V8 to commemorate the anniversary.

  2. I think GMT400 were the most reliable but GMT800 are the best mix of capability and reliability. My 800 3/4(nonHD) can tow and haul as much most 400 1ton duallys. but my 400 just works, not many electronics or wiring to go bad, just mechanical pieces that GM engineered pretty well that last a long time.

Also FYI the Quadrasteer system started in 2002, not many were sold that year but you can find it on pre-refresh trucks and SUVs.
