Chevy Silverado Interior: What Changes & Improvements Do You Want To See?

The fourth-generation, T1-based Chevy Silverado 1500 launched for the 2019 model year, and despite an initial dip in sales, Chevy’s full-size pickup now sits comfortably in second place with regard to segment sales volume. Initially, the fourth-gen Silverado 1500 was criticized, with customers and industry observers alike lambasting the Silverado’s interior design. That eventually changed, but even so, we want to know – what changes and improvements would you like to see in the Chevy Silverado interior?

When it initially launched, critics found the fourth-gen Silverado interior to be lacking, with some stating that the cabin of the next-gen, T1-based model closely resembled that of the outgoing K2-based third-generation model. Of course, that all changed with the 2022.5 model year (or 2022 interim) mid-cycle refresh, which introduced a thoroughly revamped cockpit.

Updates implemented with the refresh included larger, more vibrant screens, as well as a more aesthetically pleasing and altogether more intuitive layout. These changes played a pivotal role in helping the Silverado rebound in sales, with the truck regaining its position as the second-best-selling full-size pickup in the U.S.

To note, GM sold 555,148 units of the Silverado in 2023, capturing 26 percent market share, second only to the Ford F-Series. Check out our previous coverage for more information on how the Silverado silenced critics.

While the 2022 refresh addressed many complaints, there’s still room for growth. For a truck as iconic as the Silverado, customers have high expectations for functionality, comfort, and technology, and with the next-generation Silverado expected for the 2027 model year, now is the time to discuss what changes and improvements should be prioritized.

Some potential updates could include more advanced technology integration, such as with even larger screens and head-up displays. Others may express a desire for more premium materials, or enhanced seating comfort with greater adjustability. Maybe storage and utility are your focus, or maybe you want a quieter cabin for a more relaxing driving experience.

That all said, we want to hear from you – what changes or features do you think would make the Silverado’s interior a standout in the segment? Let us know by posting in the comments below!

  1. more comfy cloth seats. Reverse the dome light button and the door control light button. Currently the door control button is closest to the driver, when the dome control light button should be closest to the driver as that is the one used most often between the two. (on the overhead control panel) Put a small light on the mirror spot button so driver can tell when it is on/off, like the button for the cargo light has. Add more lighting to the interior. These trucks (2022.5 and up) are very dark inside at nite. How about some footwell lighting and a glove box light and more lighting in the roof so the middle of the truck is lit up. The current lighting system aims the light to the 4 outboard passengers but does nothing to light up the middle of the truck.

    1. Spot on regarding more lighting, Robert. The interior is truly really dark at night.

      1. As it should be???? Last thing I want is being blinded by my interior at night. Eye strain is a big issue especially with screens and all the buttons.

Early 2K cars had all the buttons backlight in Amber to reduce eye strain.

        1. Steve – the lighting in question is not even close to being “blinding”. Additionally, every vehicle that has ambient lighting offers the ability to enable or disable it.

        2. @ steve . Im not talking about when driving. I’m referring about when getting in the car or sitting in it when not moving and you need some light to see what your doing. These trucks are very dark.

    2. Good observations Robert. They should recruit you for a research focus group…assuming they still do those.

Agree with the interiors being dark but of course it doesn’t help when nearly every vehicle in dealer stock has a boring black interior. Easy and cheaper for gm to build and dealers to stock but is that what nearly all customers really want? To me it feels like sitting in a cave. A really dark one.

      1. @ JL I would not last at GM focus groups long, because I have common sense, something none of them currently have and they would feel threatened by me so I would be fired. It is hard to buck to system of stupidity without being singled out.

  2. Changes: Nicer seats on all models and better interior materials in higher end models. More interior color options. More exterior packages and color options – both painted and chrome bumper/grille/trim options. Air ride suspension on the RAM is intriguing. A dust sealed storage option in the back either on the outside or inside of the bed that is easy to get to for tools, tie straps, etc. Main screen that starts up and runs quicker with aerial mapping on the Google gps. Lock/Unlock buttons back on all four handles. A performance model SS, ZR2+, or both would be cool.
Keep: V8 & diesel engines (The little 4 as an option has its place too. We don’t need twin turbo 6’s.). Horizontal screen layout with physical hvac and volume controls. Carplay. Technology package options. The masculine truck look.

Also, keep headlight knobs physical please- but I doubt Ms Mary B will listen….

  4. Really dislike the console shifter. Always looked odd to me, and takes up too much space.

    Reply
    1. Yet I actually like the console shifter. Very ergonomic and easy to quickly shift back and forth between drive and reverse.

      Reply
      1. You are 100% correct. At least make it an option when center console is selected. Should also be available on the 2500 and 3500 HD Silverado. Those of us that know how to work a floor mounted stick shift appreciate the ergonomic plus as Jacob pointed out. Plus have the shifter down there removes the issue of the column shifter blocking part of the center screen on Silverado 2500 & 3500 HD models. (Why was this issue not identified by internal Chevy/GMC marketing and/or quality control groups!)

        Reply
        1. @ tim, because the quality control groups have zero common sense. thats why these issues are not identified. DEI hires, it just does not work.

      2. the big issue with the console electronic shifter is if it does not start, your not getting it in neutral. Not going to be able to push it and can ruin the transmission if the tow truck driver does not know what he is doing.

        Reply
    2. You know, I really wanted the console shifter, but after having it for a year, I’m not liking as much as I thought. I’d prefer to have the option to shift manually from the console shifter. I don’t prefer paddle shifters. If your pulling a trailer, you want to focus and not be looking around for other switches, knobs and buttons. The shifter with a +/- would be better. I don’t need a shifter from an EV. Just one man’s opinion

  5. More interior color choices. Red or a deep tan or sand. Maybe a slightly longer seat bottom cushion and possibly a bit softer.

    1. The current Gideon interior is a sand color… It’s available in cloth and leather…

      Reply
    2. Can’t personally get behind red but a few options in general would be great. Two tone seats or at the very least some variance in stitching or piping. Side Note: I thought GMC accents were always red and Chevy gold or blue? Chevy’s loving red lately. I might be in the minority on the dislike there.

  8. Add a good mix of colors for the interior, I. E. NO MORE black interiors. That is the worst color for a truck’s interior. The driver’s left side AC vent needs to move to the left as much as possible. The driver’s right side AC vent needs to move more towards the center of the truck. As they are now, they blow on your hands more than your body/face. Get rid of the redundancy of information. I. E. I don’t need a digital read out, a gage and optional heads-up display to show my speed. Same for the climate control, don’t need it to have a manual display and the same info on the video screen No self locking doors, self setting parking brake on an incline, one touch window switches are annoying, no engine shut-off when truck comes to a stop. No OnStar. Nothing is worse than accidently hitting the OnStar button and having the ladies voice yelling at you that you don’t have OnStar activated. Since the dash design process starts around the video screen, everything else that is important and actually more important than the video screen suffers. In short, let me make the decisions on what I want my truck to do and not a GM engineer. The interaction experience is more enjoyable in my 2003 truck than my new truck because of all the crap I have to tolerate in the new truck. Stop over thinking the design and function of the truck. Oh, and don’t even get me started on how high the bed sides are and how high the bed floor is from the ground. Overall, and really thinking about, modern day trucks are poorly designed because designers and engineers have forgotten what the true function of a truck is.

    1. Nigthshift interior is blue – Optional on High Country – there are three color choices on High Country
Giddeon is tan – free choice on LT and LTZ – available in leather or cloth. the Cloth LT bucket seat interior is quite nice – and quite rate.

Yet people just take what the dealer has instead of ordering an optional interior. Order one, or support the dealers that do better stock order variations.

  9. Storage space. 2KXX trucks had upper and lower door storage. Both 2KXX and T1XX trucks have smaller upper glovebox storage than GMT900, where both the uppamd lower gloveboxes actually could fit things. Now your lucky to fit your registration in just the upper glove box. Make under seat storage not an option on WT front bench and make rear seat back storage standard across the whole line. Torn on if there should be undsest rear cargo system. I’ve had both and don’t know how I feel about it. It takes up space, but sure is handy.

  10. Higher wearing fabric for cloth seats. Slightly softer seat bottoms. Use the 1991 pickups as a reference. My 2015 silverado has a little change bin and Tim Hortons gift card holder on the left side of the dash. Bring that back! Lastly, get rid of the push button parking brake- it causes too many problems. Go back to the pedal operated system. No chrome emblem on steering wheel- too much reflection from the sun.

  15. Nobody mentioned steering wheel placement. I’m 6’3″ and when I move the seat back to where my legs don’t hit the dash, the steering wheel is too far forward and the angle is wrong. I feel like I’m driving my lawn tractor. Heater, 4WD, Light controls need to be back lit and the placement is down right dangerous to get to when driving. Lighting is hidden behind the steering wheel. Shocked that the ergonomics on the 25 Silverado is so bad. my 2015 Yukon Denali was far superior, even my 03 Suburban is better. The dash is an insult to intelligent drivers. The pointer for tach and speedo are barely legible and I want numbers on my gauges. This is worse than my 66 Grand Prix. Reminds me of the video game dash of the early Safari’s. Whomever approved this needs to be forced to drive this for the rest of their career. Of course they may not be smart enough to realize how bad it is. I’m kicking myself for not investigating this more before I signed. I just couldn’t find an LTZ on the lot to sit in and test drive. I’m also concerned that the slow shifting transmission will cause excessive wear and heat when towing. Fortunately I don’t seem to have the oil burning issue. I did get the extended warranty to replace the engine when the lifters fail. My 03 Suburban with 375,000 miles still has the most comfortable seats and the cloth fabric has no signs of wear. That’s the only reason my wife let’s me keep it.

    1. Good point on the dash display. More customization of options to put in the middle would be great with different options for gauges. No reason why some colors can’t be changed or different gauge styles like the C8 Vette.

  16. I agree with the need for brighter interior lighting. I carry a led headlamp to read inside the truck at night. Footwell lighting would be nice. I also agree with a tan/ buckskin color option for the interior trim. How about an option to permanently override the engine stop/start without going to aftermarket. Aggravating . I like everything else on my updated ’22 interior. It took awhile to get used to the console shifter but now I like it.

You should fire all the engineers currently working for you all and find some new ones that actually care about the average person buying these turds you all manufacture.

  49. Switch placement is terrible in my 2023 AT4 as if engineers didn’t have a say. Every time I reach into the storage under the switch panel I accidentally hit the tailgate switch. They need to be higher on the dash above the HVAC like the other models. Also exterior lighting switches such as bed lighting and mirror lighting should be located on that panel and not hidden next to the headlights. Outlet in the console is useless as most electronics have “bricks” that don’t fit due to the outlet being placed so close to the edge of the console interior.
