Chevy Impala Driver Tries To Outrun Police With Hood Open: Video

A new viral video documents a high-speed pursuit between law enforcement and a Chevy Impala sedan after the Impala driver attempted to flee from a traffic stop. During the chase, the hood on the Chevy Impala flies open, obstructing the driver’s view. The chase ends after police officers perform a PIT maneuver, spinning the Chevy into a retaining wall.

According to a police report, the incident occurred on Southland Drive on November 29th, 2024, around 8:08 p.m. local time. An officer parked on Southland Drive initially noticed the gray sedan’s defective headlight and lack of a proper license plate, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop.

In the video, we see the officer approach the vehicle from the rear, when suddenly, the driver speeds off, initiating a high-speed chase. The suspect can be seen recklessly weaving across the road, driving towards oncoming traffic before running a stop sign and narrowly avoiding a collision with a semi-truck. The driver then drives over a raised median before entering a highway onramp.

During the pursuit, we see Impala’s hood fly open, further complicating the driver’s ability to navigate. Despite the obstructed view, the suspect continues their dangerous maneuvers, including brake-checking the pursuing officer. Around the three-minute, 35-second mark, we see the pursuing officer perform a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI), causing the sedan to spin out and crash into a concrete retaining wall on a bridge.

Upon stopping, the driver can be seen exiting the car, sitting on the bridge wall. As the officer approaches, the suspect opts to backflip off the bridge, falling roughly 35 feet to the ground below. The suspect was found unconscious, but regained consciousness shortly after. Police called for medical assistance, and the suspects was transported to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.

A passenger in the vehicle was also detained, but later released after an interview and medical evaluation. Authorities determined that the Chevy Impala was both unregistered and uninsured.

  • A couple of questions, how did this person negotiate through traffic with a hood across his windshield, did he have a forward facing camera? Is it this departments SOP to pull long guns out instead of of using there side arms? I hope GMA can do a follow up.
    Just curious.
