From a segment share standpoint, the Encore GX earned a four percent share, down two percentage points year-over-year. The Trax led with a 15 percent segment share, up four percentage points. The Crosstrek earned a 13 percent share, up two percentage points, while the HR-V maintained a 10 percent share, and the Compass held a nine percent share, up three points. The Trailblazer posted an eight percent share, down one percentage point. Meanwhile, the Envista earned a four percent share, up two percentage points.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded 16 percent to 390,206 units in Q3 2024, meaning the Buick Encore GX significantly underperformed the segment average.

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment – the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista and Encore GX – accounted for a combined 118,587 deliveries for a cumulative 31 percent segment share. That puts The General solidly into first place in the segment, accounting for nearly a third of all segment sales. Notably, all four GM models here ride on the VSS-F vehicle platform.

One could argue that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 46,862 cumulative deliveries, bumping the conglomerate to fourth place overall behind Subaru.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of 21 entries, though two of those models have been discontinued and are therefore destined to fall off this list. When combining sales volumes of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in the following order:

  • GM – 31 percent share (four models)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 16 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 13 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 10 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued, but remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • VW – four percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Typically, automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy higher sales volumes and resulting segment shares. However, those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, are also able to hold their own, in some cases outpacing automakers offering several models.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Encore GX sales underperformed again this quarter, slipping another spot as the Tri-Shield brand’s new entry-level model, the Envista, gains traction. It would seem as if the Envista is cannibalizing the Encore GX, which is just not making the strides GM likely counted on.

However, as before, combining Buick and Chevy sales in this space kept The General solidly in command and ahead of the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate that fields as many models.

About Encore GX

The 2025 Buick Encore GX boasts a few notable changes and updates over the refreshed 2024 model, including a new paint color called Aquamarine Blue Metallic and an E85-compatible engine to make it a flex fuel vehicle.

Check out all the 2025 Encore GX paint colors, the interior colorways, and available wheels.

Standard spec under the hood is the familiar turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, rated at 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, is available as an option. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional, with front-wheel-drive models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and all-wheel-drive models equipped with the GM 9-speed automatic transmission.

  1. It’s because folks march into a Buick dealership and see a much lower sticker on the Envista and buy that. As I predicted 2 years ago. And the idiotic $3K in conquest incentives did nothing for us. Where’s the loyalty incentive?
The thing that these morons don’t check out is that dealer discounts on the GX mean that the out the door price on a much better equipped base GX can be lower than on a base Envista. Same over at Chevy. Pays to snoop around, idiots.

    1. You can go to Buick dealerships in your area? They don’t exist here anymore..

  3. A very “meh” offering in a very crowded market, with two Chevys and another Buick to compete against yourself with. Brilliant.

Surprising the Encore sells in the numbers it does.

  4. Wow so many people complaining about its only front wheel drive. Well most people do fine with just front wheel drive in the snow and the fact that the Trax is higher off the ground than a regular sedan its perfect for most people in the snow. Nothing wrong with GM having to options from buick and Chevy in this segment. GM used to do this all the time and make good money doing. They would sell more if they could build more. If sales keeps up they may have to open another plant. Would not be surprised if the next trailblazer and Encore GX grow a little in size.

  5. Are any of these vehicles made in the United States?… What happened to all the US jobs?
Is gm an American car company anymore?…
    Does anyone care?

    1. Only Buick (THE foundational brand of GM) still assembled in the USA is the Enclave (and I am curious as to its NA parts content percentage at that). The rest are fully manufactured in various Asian countries, ranging from friendly (SK) to coldly adversarial (CHI-NUH). I think Buick customers DO care, otherwise their sales would be higher, imo. Also, lack of a large, comfortable sedan (that does not look alien, like the Chinese LaCrosse) is an impediment as well. IMO.

  6. With GM taking recent command of this segment and the well-established models from Toyota, Honda and Subaru also seeing sales increases, it is more than a little strange that Ford has no model that fits the category. I’m sure they’re happy with Ranger and Maverick sales, but they surely would be happier with a little CUV to peddle to all the customers going elsewhere.

  7. The GX is a beautiful vehicle particularly the Avenir trim. It is just a bit pricey when you compare it to an Envista Avenir. I like the looks of both models compared to anything Honda, Toyota, Jeep or Subaru.

  8. I still do not understand why GM kept the GX nomenclature for the Encore.
There is NO base Encore anymore. Makes absolutely zero sense.

  9. I just never understood this tactic of making a cheaper equivalent and then cry about sales cannibalization of the original more expensive car in the same category. Toyota did this to the full-sized Land Cruiser and then cancelled the model citing “poor sales” because they found it strange people weren’t willing to spend $80k for a Toyota when the Lexus version was just $2k more expensive and had a more refined ride, and the Sequoia was also a cheaper option. The Land Cruiser never needed to be $80k. PERIOD.

Its great that the Envista is a sales success for Buick and helping them gain traction, but why did they need it to be a separate model? Because one needed to offer AWD? Why can’t one model do this, and have an AWD version for those that want to spend more for the option without needing to offer the more expensive less popular model? The way the older Encore did it?

    Reply
    1. And now GM is going to land up killing the Encore GX siting “poor sales” rather than poor product management.

  10. Well, the old Trax/Encore sort of looked like a potato. It was not a bad car, and ended up on a lot of “recommended used car” lists, even the oldest model years. Now that the sleek Envista is out, I am afraid the Encore GX has once again fallen into the “rolling spud” category, with regard to looks.

    Reply
    1. No, it was indeed a bad car. Bought an Encore off the lot in 2014. It’s a turd. The LUV engine sucks and it’s surrounding components suck. Look up all the issues that the LUV has in these vehicles and shared platforms, like the Cruze.

I’m struggling to keep the thing on the road at 125,000 miles, and am just triaging what is worth fixing vs. can get away with not working. These vehicles just really take a dump past 75,000 miles. The thing eats valve cover gaskets. Three were replaced under special coverage warranty, and now one by me out of pocket. It ingests intake manifolds. If the turbo goes, it grenades itself into the engine. Injector tick ALL the time. Flex pipe and oil pan leaks/blown seals. Emissions and MAF issues. It’s definitely a, “What else is next?!,” vehicle.

It’s a Daewoo dressed up in Buick badging.
