Formula One is a global showcase of cutting-edge technology, so it’s no surprise that teams are developing artificial intelligence (AI) driven tools to gain a competitive edge. In fact, organizations at the top level of open-wheel racing are using AI to accomplish all number of tasks from calculating probabilities to running simulations.
As per a report from CNBC, McLaren is at the forefront of AI based testing in F1. The organization explained how it leverages machine learning and AI training to help it remain competitive on and off the racetrack. AI helps McClaren make decisions based on probability, which in turn helps it train its AI models for future endeavors. McClaren uses AI in three main areas, including improving vehicle performance, daily operations, and commercialization.
“We’re an organization that’s used traditional machine learning tech products for a long time,” said Dan Keyworth, leader of business technology for McClaren’s racing arm.
One of the biggest advantages to AI is its ability to run detailed simulations of on-track action, which helps guide the team in deciding when to make pit stops, which tires to install and when, and how long a vehicle should be in the pits during service while the track is hot. This is made possible by AI’s ability to analyze data tire data, track and weather conditions, and predictive analytics.
“What AI allows us to do from a generative perspective is to actually game out more of those actual scenarios and go, ‘What will happen?'” Keyworth said, adding that certain scenarios turn out to be “pretty accurate” to an “almost scary” degree.
And all the while, AI frees up manpower by handling mundane tasks and allowing engineers to focus on other areas: “It’s not a labor replacement – it’s a ‘laborious’ replacement,” Keyworth said. “You want to unlock your team to do the things that you hired them for – not to work through the overhead that lives in their role.”
As GM prepares for F1 starting in 2026, it’s likely that the forthcoming Cadillac F1 team will utilize AI tools to gather data and prepare for on-track competition. As a reminder, General Motors itself is registered as a power unit manufacturer starting in 2028, but until the automaker gets its operations off the ground, Ferrari will provide power to the Cadillac team for the next few seasons.

Not artificial intelligence… Just smart programming. Just the next interation of what teams have been doing for years. It’s not “sentient” so not really intelligence. Debate is still out whether it truly will become sentient. But, yes, nice program bro.
A computer program … like the bitcoin mine.
That’s it .
Someone should tell whoever wrote this article that it’s spelled Mclaren, not McClaren.
