Watch A Corvette E-Ray Drag Race A Tesla Model 3 Performance: Video

Say what you will about electrification – there’s no denying that EVs can be blisteringly fast in a straight line. However, internal combustion is far from beat, especially when it gets a little boost from the realm of electrons. The new C8 Corvette E-Ray is a good example of that, offering the best of both worlds thanks to the pairing of a gasoline-fueled V8 engine and an electric motor. Indeed, the E-Ray is quick, but how does it stack up against the Tesla Model 3 Performance in a drag race? This video aims to find out.

A Chevy Corvette E-Ray prepares for a drag race.

Let’s start with some specs. The C8 Corvette E-Ray is the first production Vette with a hybrid powertrain, mounting the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine (the same V8 as the C8 Stingray) just behind the cabin to produce 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, plus an electric motor up front to deliver an additional 160 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Together, the hybrid system generates a total output of 655 horsepower and 595 pound-feet of torque, and with eAWD traction and launch control activated, the E-Ray rockets from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 2.5 seconds.

However, the Tesla Model 3 Performance is certainly no pushover. Equipped with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, the high-spec 3 produces 510 horsepower and 554 pound-feet of torque. Known for its instantaneous electric torque delivery, the Model 3 Performance can achieve a 0-to-60-mph time of roughly 2.8 seconds.

Of course, vehicle mass is a consideration here as well, with the Corvette E-Ray Coupe weighing in at 3,965 pounds, and the Model 3 Performance weighing in at 4,046 pounds.

Of course, all of these numbers are just that – numbers. The real question is how they play out in the real world.

So, which powerhouse do you think walks away the winner? The video is under a minute long and captures two runs, both of which are remarkably close. Hit play to see what happens:

  1. In 50 years the E-Ray will still be around. The Tesla? Most likely in a landfill.

  3. It seems crazy to me that a 4 door sedan could be that fast, but there you have it. The Tesla won both times, though it was extremely close. The E-ray is just flat out fine, and my favorite corvette!

    1. At the end of the day they’re two completely different things that don’t really overlap clientele. Mostly because one is a 2 seater sportcar and the other is a family sedan. The Tesla wom both times, it’s much larger inside , carries 5 people so it’s easily the “better” car. But these 2 cars serve a different purpose

  6. Straight line / drag race, ok the tesla wins – run them on roadrace track with curves…
