These Two Chinese Sedans Are GM’s Top Sellers In Mexico

The Chevy Onix subcompact sedan is now officially GM Mexico’s second-best selling vehicle, slotting in behind the Chevy Aveo in terms of total sales volume for the month of September, 2024. The latest second-generation Chevy Onix made its global debut for the 2019 model year and launched in the Mexican market in the spring of 2020. The Onix is also offered in a number of overseas markets. Notably, the Chevy Onix and Chevy Aveo sedans are both produced in China.

Looking over the latest sales figures, we find the Chevy Onix racked up 2,255 sales in the Mexican market over the course of the month of September, 2024. That’s an impressive 56.60-percent increase compared to the 1,440 units sold in September of 2023. Meanwhile, GM Mexico has sold a total of 15,671 Chevy Onix units year-to-date for the 2024 calendar year, a 28.37-percent increase compared to the 12,208 units sold during the same time period last year.

By comparison, GM Mexico’s top-seller, the Chevy Aveo – available in either four-door sedan or five-door hatchback body styles, sold 4,507 units during September of 2024, a 21.34-percent decrease compared to the 5,730 units sold during September of 2023. Sales year-to-date were up 10.13 percent to 40,817 units total, as compared to a figure of 37,064 units sold year-to-date for the 2023 calendar year.

Notably, new Chevy Onix sedans sold in the Mexican market are imported from China, with production taking place at the SAIC-GM Dong Yue plant. GM began exporting the Chevy Onix from China to Mexico in May of 2022 calendar year shortly after the automaker ended domestic production of the vehicle at the GM San Luis Potosí plant. That said, GM also builds the Chevy Onix at its Gravataí plant in Brazil, which may make the decision to import the vehicle from China a bit odd. However, as GM Authority covered previously, GM’s global production planning designated that Brazilian Onix production would not allow additional capacity for the Mexican market, given the popularity of the Onix in Brazil and in the neighboring countries of Colombia and Argentina.

Check out a full breakdown of GM Mexico sales, including both Chinese-produced sedans, in the table below.

  1. Wow Mexico got more Chevy option then the USA. I just don’t understand what’s going on no more with GM.

  2. By 2025 the author must add the Blazer EV and Cadillac Optiq sales, both being assembled in Mexico now. All these GM vehicles are American, as Mexico is in North America.

  3. Can’t be true. Mary Barra said people done want small cars when she shuttered and closed the Lordstown Ohio Cruze complex.
Mary you are either wrong or a liar. Personally I think you are both.
So this onyx is really a renamed Cruze.
That snake Barra will probably import these foreign cars back to America.

  4. I wish we could get the Cavalier as an entry level Chevy..
