If You Could Make One Change To The Corvette C8, What Would It Be?

The Corvette C8 marked a watershed moment for Chevrolet, debuting for the 2020 model year as the first-ever mid-engine production vehicle to wear the Chevy Corvette nameplate. The move transformed the iconic American sports car into a global performance juggernaut, collecting praise from critics and fans alike. Now, as the eighth-generation dives into its fifth year in production, we have to ask – if you could make one change to the Corvette C8, what would it be?

The rear top-down view of the Corvette C8 Stingray.

So far, the C8 Corvette has collected a long list of sales successes for Chevrolet, including several notable changes when it comes to the buyer demographic. For starters, most C8 Corvette buyers are new to the Chevrolet brand, with two out of three buyers making the C8 their first Chevy. According to GM, the most cross-shopped vehicle for C8 Corvette buyers is the Porsche 911.

The average buyer age has also changed substantially with the C8, dropping by seven years. According to Corvette marketing manager Harlan Charles, the C8 is now the number one sports car for buyers under the age of 35, and the C8 Corvette has doubled in sales among Generation X buyers, as well. What’s more, the C8 is attracting wealthier customers in general, with the median household income for C8 customers $76,000 higher than the equivalent figure for customers who purchased a Corvette C7.

Indeed, looking over the lineup, there’s plenty on offer. The range starts with the entry-level C8 Stingray, which boasts the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 engine producing 490 horsepower (495 horsepower with the Z51 package), while the track-ready Z06 pushes things a bit further with the naturally aspirated, flat-plane crank 5.5L V8 LT6, churning out 670 horsepower. There’s also the C8 E-Ray, offered as the world’s first hybrid AWD Corvette, pairing the Stingray’s 6.2L V8 with an electric motor for a combined 655 horsepower. Finally, we have the C8 ZR1, which features the twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8 LT7, good for more than 1,000 horsepower and a top speed in excess of 230 mph.

However, despite its many triumphs, there’s always room for improvement. Could the interior materials use an upgrade to rival luxury rivals? Perhaps a manual transmission for the purists? What about a sleeker infotainment design? Or maybe a wilder exterior option that pushes the design envelope even further?

We’d love to hear your thoughts. If you could make one change to the Corvette C8, what would it be? Let us know in the comments below.

  29. If I could change one thing about the C8 Corvette: How quick and efficient would a C8 Corvette be with a 2.7 l. Turbo 4 cylinder. 310 HP and 430 LB TRQ, maybe even better if made for premium fuel. When you compare the drive train layout to a C7. It’s more efficient. Better traction, shifts faster.
With less weight nearly as much torque as a previous generation, 6.2 l V8 and and given similar handling packages would probably outperform a C7 On a road course track.
Give me that in an E-Ray and call it an Eco- Ray. If I could average 30 to 35 miles per gallon in a Corvette that could easily do a 150 MPH, What would be wrong with that? Faster than a C7, quicker than a C7 and with AWD, it’s a no brainer.
It’s the mid engine layout and the ultra quick shifting dual clutch, 8 speed transmission that really make it shine. The Z06 is for spirited driving on and off the track. The ZR1 is for beating those million dollar foreign cars, and some domestic ones.
If you told a C7 owner (6.2L NA- V8) they could have a car that is better in many ways and could be proven on and off track, it might change their mind. That V8 exhaust noise does not make it faster, just louder…

  41. I love my 2024 Z06 but it is not perfect.

I agree that there should be a lot of thought into making the car lighter. Even if the lightweight model is tied to a more expensive performance package. Z07R? How crazy would this car be if it was #400-500 lighter? It would be cool to see a Z06 model targeted at the GT3 RS with less weight and active aerodynamics. Let’s go GM!

The constant production constraints are ridiculous. Why in the hell can’t GM either find vendors that can meet demand or make carbon fiber parts themselves? The aftermarket has no problem. Waiting for a Z07 with exposed carbon fiber, carbon fiber wheels, and a carbon fiber interior cost me an extra year of waiting. I know GM is making $ on these options. Has there ever been a time when all of the carbon fiber options were available to order? I could not get the black trim parts in front of the rear vents in carbon? My dealer (McMulkin / Largest in the world) said they had never seen them available to order. I also would have liked to get the carbon fiber mirror option but was sick of waiting. To me this is a car I don’t want aftermarket parts on.

30 Days of the factory navigation system data on a car with a $185K MSRP is stupid. Either build the Google data plan into the car price or remove it completely. Car Play is fine but why is the standard Google Nav an added data fee on a loaded Z06 but free on the other three GM vehicles I purchased this year? I hate add on fees.

The wireless phone charger is in a terrible location.

The 5 gear issue should be changed. That still leaves 2 gears for overdrive, and we are paying the gas guzzler tax already. No reason for 3 overdrive gears. Let’s show the world what a Z06 can do on the Ring.

As a Lotus Exige owner, I also would not mind a roof mounted air scoop. I think they look exotic. The other thing that could tie into the weight issue are the dimensions of the car. Parked next to the Lotus, the Z06 looks huge. It is twice the size! Does it need to be so big? Get rid of the rear trunk on high performance models to help reduce dimensions?

Because a lot of use don’t put a ton of miles on per year, I would like to see a longer warranty (time not miles). Would it kill them to do a longer warranty to the original owner only even if it reduces the mileage limit? This might help with some of the high-end Corvette buyers who are interested in more exotic brands but fear the cost and hassle of exotic ownership. It would not surprise me if I don’t have 10,000 miles in 5 years. I hope to add a ZR1 to the collection if I can wade through my next complaint, but I do not plan on ever selling this Z06. Can GM take better care of long time, loyal owners that don’t put a ton of miles?

I appreciate the policy to void warranties on cars that are flipped. The dealer markup circus was/is crazy. I wish there was a way to buy locally without the games that the dealers like to play. The largest Corvette dealer in MN only sells around 40 cars/year yet they are everywhere on the streets. I tried to buy locally but the dealers were struggling to even name a price (over MSRP) for fear it would be too low so I put a deposit in with McMulkin before the Z06 was officially announced. McMulkin was great but it would be nice to buy local if Chevrolet could control the dealer circus. How about direct sales at MSRP where you place the deposit with GM and they don’t allow add ons at the dealer unless the buyer is willing (PPF or those types of things) on high demand models. I’d love to own a ZR1 but while the dealer circus for Z06’s has passed, the fever is still in full swing on ZR1’s. Even McMulkin is not accepting deposits. Customers would prefer to buy locally if the games can be avoided.

For all of those points, my Z06 is the first car I have said I will own for life and is my favorite material possession. The team at Chevy did a hell of a job escalating the car and brand. I hope they commit to ICE engines for enthusiast cars and continue to refine, upgrade, and improve Corvette. I personally have no interest in a hybrid or electric Corvette. The battery has a shelf life. I like the ability to park my car possibly for years and not have the shelf life of a battery hanging over my head. In my opinion, enthusiast vehicles need ICE powertrains.

Hey GM, let’s also fund Corvette Racing to a proper level. The idea of Cadilliac in F1 is exciting but we need to Corvettes at the top of the GT3 scene worldwide before spending tons of money promoting Cadilliac in IMSA and F1. I’m in favor of doing them all well but I would prefer we are consistent winners in GT3 racing first and forever. If you have the extra $ to chase prototype and F1 with Cadilliac, that would be amazing but don’t spread the $ and talent too thin. Seeing Corvette mid pack in GT3 is not acceptable.

    1. Features cost $. The solution to your problem has been available.

Some of the people here have said that Corvette prices need to be lower. Others want more performance, features, …

As owners, we have to understand that you can’t have a lower price and more content. GM is a for-profit corporation not a wizarding organization. The more we want in a Corvette, the more we need to be willing to pay.

A base Corvette is a lot of car for the $ but is also radically different from a highly optioned car. When cars range form $70K to $190K there are going to be differences and we as buyers have to decide where the right value is for us.

I definitely recommend making a better seat.

  51. Make it lighter. It weighs 3650lbs! It’s a pig. That’s almost the same and LT1 Camaro! A Silverado Pickup is 4400. Chevrolet keeps making heavier and heavier “sports cars” demanding more and more HP, heavier engines and more heavy cooling systems. Making lighter sports cars = vastly better handling, significantly lower track times, less brake and tire wear and way more satisfying and fun to drive. Spend some serious money on making it light and everything else will be a lot better except aesthetics of course. 3000 lbs is a proven achievable number.
Of course this presents a marketing issue since the horse power figure is most important to the vast majority of drivers who never will come close to the performance potential of the car as seen at the track. Unfortunately the importance of light weight is largely ignored.

  97. Besides a manual transmission, there have to be more exciting color choices than the current palates. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and McLaren to name a few, have some of the most beautiful color choices that bring out the true design of their vehicles. Colors like lime green, fire orange, bright blue, aqua blue, deep purple, cream, ruby red, lava orange, chalk, orange/yellow, deep purple and classic grey are just some of the dozens of color choices these corvette competitive brands have to choose from. The corvette has the same red, blue, black, white and silver colors since forever. When something exciting comes along like Cacti, it is a one year and done color. Hysteria purple is ok, but look at the 20 or so purple choices these brands have and you won’t think it’s that cool anymore compared to their purples. And now the rumors are that the colors will even be more limited to cut the costs of the vehicle. That’s fine, but at least make some exciting colors an option to purchase. Come on creativity department, let’s see what others do and maybe we can learn something from them.

    1. Maybe they need to offer some of these colors to people like you who are willing to pay the additional thousands that these exotics charge.

    2. Agree with you on the colors. I was lucky enough to order and receive a cacti green. I get compliments every trip out.
Corvette needs to update their color choices, not everyone wants black, red, or white.
I’ll keep mine until a better color comes along, doesn’t look like that will be anytime soon.

I think this generation needs a bit a manual, less weight, and maybe more of a Y model split like they are doing at Cadillac to emulate Porsche and such with more GT type models with a luxury focus and more hardcore sport super car trims at the different power levels.

  99. The engine needs to be easier to modify. I had a 2021 model and wanted more punch above 50mph but supercharger and turbo package prices made it unreasonable. So I sold my C8 and traded to a Gt500 Shelby that was easily modified to 930hp and put the smile back on my face. Other problems were claustrophobic interior, difficulty entering/exiting, poor location for phone charger and excessive road noise.

  103. I would like to see a Grand Sport before the C8 ends production! I had a C6 Grand Sport and it looked so much better than a regular C6! Now own a ’23 C8 and I love it, but like someone else said the wide body just looks so much better! And I don’t need any more than 495 HP, that number is just fine with me. Zero to 60 in around 3 seconds is faster than any other Vette that I have owned! It impresses most of my passengers! I bought my car to drive and that’s what I do. It has over 20,000 miles and is comfortable on a long trip. I have just had to learn to pack light!

  104. I love GM products. I have my whole life. The C8 is an exceptional car in every aspect except the looks. I find it ugly and very angular. Ferrari epitomizes the sexy vehicle look. I would love to see the C8 take on a more flowing style to the body lines. Smooth it out and make it seamless. It would be the most popular car in the world. The performance is astounding.

    1. XD Dude, thats why u get C1-C7. Now its time for real performance. Dont get me wrong, I love the Front Rear set up, especially the storage space and ability to take my dogs with me. They are not going back. You probably want chrome rims too.

  108. The phone charger is useless. Its in a horrible position and won’t hold or charge a Samsung S23+
*It’s a small complaint overall, but in this day and age a good place to rest a cell phone is a must.

Other than that the C8 is near perfect.

  109. Door design/side vent. Make the door narrower to open. Move the vent rearward. Make the door trim more recessed at the lower front to allow feet to swing out. Reduces overall open width by over 6″ and maybe door doesn’t have to be opened to widest setting to get out.

  110. Manual transmission base model. Seriously, why would I replace my C6 6 speed manual with an automatic? I’d never buy an automatic Corvette, regardless of how much faster it might be. The joy in driving my Vette is the ENTIRE experience. Removing my interplay with the shifter, clutch
and engine removes a huge part of why I’d buy one .

  113. Grab handles for passenger- Put it in the wall of buttons which is awesome. Have it recessed & one in the door by redesigning the door handle window button area or adding hold to it.

remove the lines from body and smooth it out like a Ferrari or the timeless C4/5/6 bodylines are. Paul from Everyday Driver showed via his 3D software

Add a rear aero diffuser portion to the Z51, Z07, ZR1 Track King package

Lower the ride height & flush the rims from factory.

Make the stealth interior default & chrome the option.

Better colors!! A REAL purple like Plum Crazy from Dodge! Copper & lizard green with metal flake.

Custom paint option for $3-5k like Porsche does. Also have 20 colors, check out the colors that VW had for their 40th.

Grand Sport with more HP and louder exhaust stock, heads/cam package from Lingenfelter as example with custom choice of cams. I can dream cant I!!

    Vertical doors

    Active Aero

Manual for those who want it

    Flat bottom wheel only

Lower the drivers seat about an inch or 2 for PERFECT track seating position

    one touch up/down HTC
Add custom lighting options for interior and engine bay. its easy and my 15 Golf R had it, lights in door handles to see them, footwell, along the dash and had option to change the color in the head units options. I loved the blue and had ability to very the brightness and color tones.

Grill Guards standard and intake also
Better wheel options-contract with BBS, Enki, Volk for lighter strong forged options flush mounted.
Carbon pad option for less dust-Carbotech has some check with Korey Paragon Perf

Option for continuous recording of cameras for security as Tesla does.

  114. Forgot to add

Next Z06 remove the rear trunk and shorten up the car. Yes that means new rear panels but there making new ones for the wide body anyhow. I think that a great sleek track weapon with no rear trunk would be amazing. It would look like Ferrari. GM stole their engine now steal their body lines too! Nothing wrong with that. C8 was a Lambo style now C9 make it classic smooth lines that will live on forever!! No boy racer no my 1st supercar look.

    Relocate the phone charger
    Add Sunglasses holder.

Redesign or add the Strut cover for free as water collects and rusts out the strut tops.

  122. Purchased a new C8 70th anniversary white coupe with the Z51 package. My only requests would be an exterior Z51 badge on the exterior, intelligent cruise control ( shame on GM to sell a 100K car without it ), and fix the damn Tremec transmission. Does anyone else experience a power lag in tour mode when accelerating from a rolling stop or moving from a lower speed along an avenue when the engine guns and you go nowhere fast?

  123. To all of you who gave me a thumbs down for my 2.7 liter turbo 4 cylinder idea.
I’ll see you in my rear view mirror. And when your filling up, I still be cruising at 80 mph with 1/3 of a tank. I’ll fuel up after another 100 + miles.
Sometimes you know you’re right when there’s so much opposition.
Beep….Beep… enjoy looking at your car while getting gas. That puts me another 5 miles down the road.
