Here’s How To Use The Chevy Silverado EV Frunk (eTrunk)

One of the benefits of an electric powertrain is more space under the hood – without a big internal combustion engine and all the associated plumbing, the front end of the vehicle opens up considerably, potentially providing additional cargo room in the process. Such is the case for the Chevy Silverado EV, which includes what GM refers to as the eTrunk feature. Now, GM Authority is taking a closer look at the Chevy Silverado EV eTrunk and how to use it.

Also called the power hood, the Chevy Silverado EV eTrunk can be opened and closed via the key fob, a button on the instrument panel, or a button on the front fascia.

To open the eTrunk using the key fob, simply press the power hood button twice. The power hood button is located in the bottom right of the key fob, and is marked with the image of a truck with the hood open and script that reads “x2.” To close the hood, press the same button twice and hold the second press until the hood is fully closed.

To open the eTrunk from inside the Chevy Silverado EV, press the power hood button located on the left instrument panel. Similar to the button on the key fob, the hood open button on the instrument panel is indicated by an image of a truck with the hood open. Press and hold this button to close the eTrunk.

Finally, the eTrunk can be opened using the touch pad located in the vehicle front fascia. The touch pad is located within the grille, and will only work if the vehicle is unlocked, or the key fob is within range. The power hood can also be closed manually by simply pulling it down until the power assist is engaged to secure the hood closed. A chime sound will indicate that the power assist function is activated.

Notably, users can customize their power hood settings, including the hood open angle through the settings menu via the infotainment screen. Simply go to Settings, Vehicle, Comfort and Convenience, then Power Hood. Users are also advised to not place hands or body parts in the path of the hood as it is closing. Additionally, it is not advised to drive with the hood open. Vehicle speed is limited to 26 mph with the hood open.

Finally, to open the power hood when the vehicle is unpowered, pull the hood release cable twice. The cable is located in the lower left side underneath the instrument panel.

  2. I own a 2025 equinox RS. I find the power more than sufficient. The torque comes in at 2000 rpm and it’s an 8 speed compared to the 2024 that was a 6 speed.
