GM Steadily Rising To The Top Of The Sale Charts In This Luxury Segment

GM is making significant strides in the luxury crossover C-segment, challenging established competitors with rising sales figures. With the Buick Envision and Cadillac XT4 showing robust performance, General Motors is drawing closer to the top of the sales charts in this competitive market. Meanwhile, established European rivals fail to keep pace.

The Buick Envision has helped put GM at the top of the luxury crossover C-segment.

Over the course of the third quarter of the 2024 calendar year, the Buick Envision achieved notable success, moving 12,565 units, a 72.6-percent increase compared to the 7,279 units sold during Q3 of 2023. Meanwhile, the Cadillac XT4 also saw gains, with 5,655 units sold in Q3 of 2024, a 6.7-percent increase over a figure of 5,300 sales recorded in Q3 of 2023.

Sales Numbers - General Motors Luxury C-Segment Crossovers - Q3 2024 - USA

MODEL Q3 24 / Q3 23 Q3 24 Q3 23 YTD 24 / YTD 23 YTD 24 YTD 23
BUICK ENVISION +72.62% 12,565 7,279 -1.20% 34,425 34,842

TOTAL +44.84% 18,220 12,579 -4.82% 50,113 52,649

Together, these two models amassed 18,220 sales in Q3 of 2024, securing General Motors with a 23-percent cumulative market share in the segment. The sales performance also places General Motors within less than 700 units of the top competitor, the Lexus NX, which led with 18,876 units sold during Q3 of 2024, marking a 7-percent growth over a figure of 17,647 units sold in Q3 of 2023.

This growth is particularly impressive as General Motors’ two-model lineup in the luxury crossover C-segment surpasses the combined sales volume of similarly positioned luxury brands like BMW (X1, X2) and Mercedes-Benz (GLA-Class, GLB-Class). Cumulatively speaking, the BMW X1 and BMW X2 netted just 6,303 units cumulatively over the course of Q3 2024, while the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class netted just 9,811 units cumulatively over the course of Q3 2024.

Looking over the full sales results, we find the Buick Envision positioned second in-segment with 12,565 units sold, as compared to 18,876 units sold for the first-placed Lexus NX and 12,044 units sold for the third-placed Acura RDX. Meanwhile, the Cadillac XT4 was seventh in-segment with 5,655 units sold, as compared to 6,703 units sold for the sixth-placed Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and 5,597 units sold for the eighth-placed BMW X1.

These results are a particularly important development for General Motors, given The General isn’t really a sales leader in any other luxury segment, with the exception of the Cadillac Escalade. As covered previously, the Escalade is not only the brand’s flagship, but is also its best-selling model – a rather unique occurrence in the luxury space. Regardless, GM’s up-and-coming sales lead for the Envision and XT4 won’t last for much longer, as the automaker will discontinue the XT4 come January.

  4. Well GM didn’t seem to get the memo because they are axing the XT4.

  5. I would definitely consider the Envision Avenir for our next car, especially if they never fix the lackluster powertrain in the Terrain Denali. That being said, I am wondering if the Buick buyers can expect to receive a luxury dealership service experience like some of these other brands. We bought a Q3 this year and the Audi service at our local dealership is off the charts terrific. Compare that to the Buick/GMC dealer we bought our 2018 Terrain Denali from where the service department got so bad it was actually shut down for a several months!

  9. Lexus should be dominating here…they have better value for money cars than GMC/Chevrolet/Cadillac/Buick has….reliability is a wash however…(latest Lexus have been having problems and are NOT the same as that of the past….).
