Ford Super Duty Hybrid Incoming To One-Up Chevy Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD

GM’s crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, is gearing up to offer a new hybrid variant of the Ford Super Duty pickup truck. Notably, GM does not currently offer a hybrid variant for its Super Duty rivals, the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, nor has GM announced anything with regard to hybridizing either heavy-duty pickups. The new Ford Super Duty hybrid is expected to start rolling off the line later in the decade.

Ford is expected to offer a new Super Duty hybrid sometime in the future.

Per a report from our sister publication, Ford Authority, FoMoCo was originally anticipated to offer a new Super Duty hybrid model with the recent 2023 redesign, however, this never panned out. In addition, the Super Duty was left out of Ford’s recent announcement that it would offer a hybrid powertrain in every one of its ICE-based models by 2030.

Even so, with the continuing popularity of the hybrid Ford F-150 PowerBoost, which now accounts for a quarter of all F-150 production, a new Super Duty hybrid makes sense. Ford is set to drastically expand its hybrid offerings over the next several years.

The new Ford Super Duty hybrid is expected to feature Pro Power Onboard that’s beyond the capabilities of the current pure-ICE model, per Ford Authority. Pro Power Onboard essentially allows the user to use their vehicle as a mobile generator, providing electricity to things like power tools, a mini fridge, or a heater. The current pure-ICE Super Duty Pro power Onboard Generator is capped at 2.0 kW of output, while the F-150 PowerBoost is set at 7.2 kW, indicating the considerable increase with the added hybrid technology.

Notably, GM has announced plans to reintroduce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to its North American lineup by 2027 as a means of bridging the gap between purely ICE-based models and fully electric models as the broader all-electric vehicle charging infrastructure is built-out. That said, the exact form factor that these PHEVs will take has yet to be officially detailed.

  1. Not happening.

Jimmy over at fordy is looking for WEF cudos in an environment where even VW is running away from EV’s.

    1. Farley BETTER fix the issues that plague these trucks first, BEFORE being the first to the market. Being last to the game is better than being first to the market.

  4. I’m here for the hybrids. Put a V8 and an electric motor in a Camaro and a truck and take my money. You can still make all those old woman vehicles, too.

  5. Just wait for it. GM likes to be late to the party. Rumors are they are coming in 2027.

  6. Guaranteed increased purchase co$t vs. how much pure battery “range” in an HD pick-up plus increased driveline complexity and vehicle weight and co$t of eventually replacing hybrid’s battery……how about some Cost Accounting here ? Would the somewhat meager fuel savings be worth it all ?

    1. Ford engines are a mess. One look at the Ranger’s engine is enough. Same with the new Tacoma.
