The Cadillac Lyriq is the luxury marque’s very first all-electric production vehicle, officially launching for the 2023 model year. Naturally, GM will be thinking about introducing a mid-cycle update for the Lyriq in the near future, with the earliest refresh date currently expected for the 2027 model year. Now, however, it looks like we may have just got our first glimpse at the updated Cadillac Lyriq design.
In a new video, The Wall Street Journal visits the GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, checking out the campus, including the latest studio upgrades and investments. In the video, we see teams of GM designers hard at work in the background. Although there’s nothing specific called out, one of the projects spotted appears to be a clay model showing off the refreshed Cadillac Lyriq design.
The possible refreshed Cadillac Lyriq can be seen at multiple points in the video, giving us a relatively clear look at the new styling. In the video, we see the GM designers working with the clay, and although this may or may not represent the final production design, it nonetheless provides us with a good idea where GM may be headed with regard to the updated aesthetic.
Some of the highlights of the new look include a new front end layout, which appears as though it was partially inspired by the Cadillac Opulent Velocity concept. We also see a reshaped rear end, which deletes the boomerang taillights seen on the current model, as well as reshaped rear pillars.
Check out the full video right here:
Back in early October, GM Authority sources reported that the Cadillac design studio is “very busy,” and is in fact the busiest design studio at GM currently. Gauging by the video, it looks like our sources were right on the money.
To note, Cadillac recently unveiled the new Lyriq-V, the first all-electric model to wear a V-Series performance badge. The new Lyriq-V is distinguished by a new lower grille and lip, as well as a body-colored front bumper, body-colored wheel arch moldings, unique lower-door styling, and a new wheel design.

So Cadillac next design language should follow that of the “ Cadillac sollei “ concept pretty much…
3:40 a lot of models covered under black tarps as well
Maybe they’re beginning to reshape it as a Buick. The clay modeler’s shirt says Buick Design Studio.
I definitely would Love to see All Upcoming and Future Buicks to share and ride on Cadillac platforms which they should. Please NO more Chinese or Korean sourced and made Buicks and NO sharing platforms with Chevy. All Future Cadillac and Buick vehicles should be made 100% in North America including All of the Engines, Transmissions as well as All Parts and Components. It’s terrible and sad how far the Cadillac and Buick brands have be watered down and cheapened by GM. Cadillac and Buick should return to their roots and go back to what they were originally known for making.
I’d Love to see a Buick based on the Celestiq and for them to revive the Park Avenue name. A New Regal Sedan and Coupe off the CT5 and Riviera Large Coupe and Convertible based off the Solllei Concept car would be Amazing.
They need a vehicle above the Enclave to compete with the Escalade and Lincoln Navigator and various European imports.
Buick also needs their own performance line again GS, GSX or GNX similar to Cadillac’s V-Series and Blacking cars. Cadillac and Buick need Sedans, Coupes, Convertibles and possibly some Wagons again and not just boring and generic looking SUVs and Crossovers. Hopefully Buick will continue producing ICE engines through 2030 like Cadillac has already decided to do including many other car manufactures who are backing away or are delaying new electric vehicle production because of lack of interest by the public and consumers. I’ll never buy any Electric Cadillac or Buick and have zero desire too.
Similar to Cadillac’s V-Series and Blackwing cars.
I agree with you 100%. We can only hope.
Probably not. After watching the video, it makes more sense. It seems GM has eliminated their division-based design studio model which was in place for many years.
Now apparently a Chevrolet designer works next to a Cadillac designer all in a large room so I suppose someone working on a Buick (with a “Buick Design Studio”) shirt could assist with a future Cadillac being designed nearby.
The way the old system was described, each brand had their own designers and studios and they worked in secrecy with only the VP of Design, who oversaw all the studios, knowing how the Buick approach to a new B-Body, for example differed from Oldsmobile’s effort. In the Bill Mitchell days, the divisions competed with each other to out-do the other GM brands.
It’s fascinating to hear the retired designers describe how things were done in those days and how Mitchell kept delineation among the brands. The guys working in the Chevrolet 3 studio on the new-for-1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo would have no idea what the Pontiac 2 studio was cooking up with their rival ‘78 Grand Prix. They also describe how “Cadillac could afford” more complex and expensive to produce designs so working in a Cadillac studio was a coveted assignment.
I don’t believe gm would allow clear, current video inside their design centers. I believe these are old videos, portraying the Lyric in its original gestation phase, before the production version we have now.
I think you’re right. These are precursor designs before they got to the current aesthetic. They’re not future refreshes.
This is wrong, they were touring GM’s new design studio that just opened recently. This is not from years ago.
Meh,
Both things could be true. The new Design Center tour occurred recently but it was staged for the media with old clay models and some employees demonstrating how they work.
The clay modelers would be working on 2028 and 2029 models right now, not the Lyriq or an upcoming refresh. All of that design work is already complete.
The Lyriq Refresh is still several years away and you can see the front of the Lyriq is taking shape from the recent Cadillac Opulent Velocity concept.
GM is having a really tough time right now
EV problems and related recalls are robbing the company of a lot of needed cash that could have been used towards developing hybrid vehicles to adapt to consumer demands
They jumped the gun on adopting EVs
Needlessly overweight vehicles with poor range and endless glitches
I think GM will be lucky to see the light of day after 2030 given all of the missteps that are costing it day by day
LOL those EV recalls were short term. Endless gitches what? HAHAHAHAH!
GM has been doing great if you pay attention.
GM is reintroducing Hybrids in 2027 and already has several in other markets.
All true. I think GM is trying to keep a lid on their problems to keep from spooking Wall Street but anyone paying attention to their EV production plans vs. reality can see, they’ve badly misjudged the market. They’ve spent lavishly on Ultium and battery production/mineral mining capacity and so far have seen no ROI whatsoever. They’re losing ground quickly in China too. Overpriced pickups and BOF SUVs and vans being sold in the US are the primary profit generators now.
The irony of this new design center is that they just fired many of the people who would’ve worked there.
Yet GM expects to be making money on their EVs in short order and if you paid attention to their Quarter Numbers GM EVs are starting to sell and sell well.
for me all models shown are too boring…
