General Motors has issued a Safety Recall for certain units of the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana vans in Cutaway configuration, which were produced with an incorrect inside rearview mirror that lacks the necessary rear vision camera video display.
According to GM safety recall number N242481960, the affected Chevy Express Cutaway and GMC Savana Cutaway units were discovered because approximately 75 complaints about non-functional video for the rearview mirror caused a GM quality engineer to investigate.
The problem:Â Navistar built the affected Chevy Express and GMC Savana units using an ordinary, low-tech inside rearview mirror when a mirror containing rear vision camera technology should have been used. This leads to the affected vehicles completely lacking the rear vision video display they should have.
The hazards:Â the lack of a built-in rear vision camera video display in the rearview mirror of the affected Express and Savana units could make it more difficult for the vehicle driver to see behind the van. This, in turn, could increase the chance of a collision or accident, particularly when driving in reverse.
Notably, at this time, General Motors is not aware of any actual injuries resulting from the specified problem.
The fix:Â GM service personnel are instructed to apply the available fix to any Express or Savana units brought in to the dealership by owners, or that are located via inspection in the dealer’s inventory.
The fix consists of removing the current mirror from the affected unit and installing a new mirror with the correct built-in rear vision camera video display instead. This fix is applied free of charge since all vehicles are still fully under warranty as of this writing.
Affected components:Â inside rearview mirror.
Affected vehicles:
- 2024 Chevy Express
- 2024 GMC Savana
Number of affected vehicles:Â GM has identified a total of 326 Chevy Express units and 256 GMC Savana units affected by the current recall.
Only vehicles with less than a gross vehicle weight rating under 10,000 pounds, equipped with the inside rearview mirror video display (RPO code DRJ), are affected by the issue and therefore subject to the recall.
Owners should:Â wait for the arrival of GM recall notification letters, which are currently slated to be mailed starting on December 30th, 2024.
