2025 GMC Terrain Gets Revised Fuel Economy Ratings

Official EPA-certified fuel economy ratings are now available for the 2025 GMC Terrain, which brings in the all-new third generation of the Big Red brand crossover model with an extensive list of changes ranging from the aesthetic to the mechanical.

GM Authority previously reported on the new fuel economy figures for the 2025 GMC Terrain, but had to make use of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) numbers at the time.

The freshly available EPA fuel economy figures reveal that front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration of the 2025 GMC Terrain gets adjusted numbers across the board. City fuel economy rises by 2 miles per gallon to 26 miles per gallon for 2025, while highway mpg actually declines by 1 mpg to 28 miles per gallon. Combined mpg is 27 miles, up 1 mpg for FWD.

The all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration, by contrast, sees only one EPA economy figure increase. City mpg goes up by 1 mile to 24 miles per gallon, while highway and combined mpg remain unchanged from the outgoing 2024 model year at 28 and 25 miles per gallon respectively.

These slightly improved mileage figures for the 2025 GMC Terrain may be due to transmission changes introduced with the launch of the new generation. You can examine the figures for yourself using the information in the following table:

2025 GMC Terrain EPA Fuel Economy Ratings
Drivetrain 2025MY City/Highway/Combined MPG 2024MY City/Highway/Combined MPG 2025MY vs. 2024MY
Terrain FWD 26/28/27 24/29/26 +2/-1/+1
Terrain AWD 24/28/25 23/28/25 +1/0/0

Among the changes debuted with the new generation, the 2025 Terrain pairs the GM continuously variable automatic transmission with the FWD configuration. AWD variants use the GM eight-speed automatic transmission. Output for the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine is 175 horsepower, while torque is 184 pound-feet for FWD units and 203 pound-feet for AWD units.

Other updates include a rugged-looking truck-style grille, C-shaped headlight signatures, and two-tone roof color options for the exterior. Two paint colors have been retired, including Riptide Blue Metallic (color code GJV) and Deep Bronze Metallic (color code GXN), while safety features include, but are not limited to, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking.

  1. I wonder why GMC always lags so far behind Chevy on getting their new vehicles out? I see no credible reason for it. Has production even started yet on the new Terrain?

    1. We bought a new Encore GX yesterday and the dealers says the ’25 Terrains are arriving “any day”. Yes, production is underway.

    2. one is made in Ontario, Canada the other in Mexico – one is immediately available in North America and the other isn’t.

  2. Why does the FWD with CVT get such poor highway MPG?

  3. The ’24 FWD Equinox got 26/31/28, so I think those ’24 Terrain figures are suspect. In any event, the numbers for the ’25, like those of the ’25 Equinox, are totally uncompetitive.

  4. My 2018 equinox 2 liter beats this every day. Smaller engines and crapper mpg, way to go gm

    1. These are EPA numbers. Most GM engines do better than their EPA rating.

According to the comments on GM Authority, the 2 liter turbo is the best engine ever and defies the laws of physics, somehow producing far more power and getting better fuel economy than the 1.5 Turbo. GM should put the 2 liter turbo in every Terrain and Equinox since it almost never needs gas, compared to the 1.5 Turbo it is a perpetual motion machine. GM is very foolish for hurting their EPA number by using the little 1.5 Turbo instead of the 2.0. Plus the incredible acceleration of the 2.0 helps all the elderly GM Authority frequent posters get their bowels moving without stewed prunes or Miralax, another wonder of the GM 2.0 turbo.

  9. I and my entire family only buy made in USA GM vehicle because we bought several made outside the USA over the years and always had issues. Me personally , I own a Wentzville, MO made 2018 Colorado extended cab 2wd that was ordered in the fall of 2017 and zero issues. Only thing I replaced was a battery at 5.5 years.
