2025 Chevy Silverado EV RST Gets Sidewinder Mode Diagonal Drive Functionality

A fun gimmick that’s exclusive to GM EVs is the ability to turn all four wheels in the same direction. An increasing number of EVs have 4-wheel steering to improve maneuverability, but select GM vehicles are the only ones that can get around obstacles with unidirectional 4-wheel steering. Now, this feature is available on the 2025 Chevy Silverado EV.

First, it was called CrabWalk on the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV. Then, Arrival ModeCadillac’s version of CrabWalk – was announced for the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Now, this same feature is coming to the Chevy brand with the name Sidewinder Mode.

The 2025 Chevy Silverado EV is the first Chevy model with Sidewinder Mode. It comes standard on the RST trim for the 2025 model year. It allows all four wheels to turn in the same direction, moving the truck diagonally while keeping the body straight at speeds up to 20 mph.

Chevy says Sidewinder Mode “gives drivers a new way to conquer everything from rugged terrain to tight parking spaces” when engaged from the infotainment screen. In our experience using CrabWalk in the GMC Hummer EV, it is sometimes convenient in parallel parking situations, but it’s more amusing than it is useful.

To engage Sidewinder Mode, press Controls on the infotainment screen, navigate to Rear Steering, and select Sidewinder Mode. Graphics on the 17.7-inch infotainment screen and a message on the 11.1-inch instrument cluster will make it clear that Sidewinder Mode is active and ready for maneuvering.

If you have a 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition, you haven’t missed out on this cool feature. Sidewinder Mode will go to 2024 RST models as an over-the-air update.

Other updates to the 2025 Chevy Silverado EV include the addition of the midrange LT trim, three battery pack options, an increased maximum range estimate of 492 miles, and five new paint options. We’re expecting the rugged Trail Boss trim to join the lineup at some point for the 2025 model year, but we may be waiting until the 2026 model for the off-roader. Since it’s touted as a feature for off-roading, we can’t help but wonder if the Silverado EV Trail Boss will also get standard Sidewinder Mode.
