2003 marked the 50th anniversary for the Chevy Corvette. To honor the occasion, a 50th Anniversary Edition package was offered, with 11,632 copies produced, split into 4,085 coupes and 7,547 convertibles. The 50th Anniversary Edition, RPO 1SC, was priced at $5,000 and included Anniversary Red “Xirallic crystal” paint, Shale leather interior and steering wheel, unique front fender emblems, champagne painted wheels and center caps, F55 magnetic Selective Ride Control, head-up display, power telescopic steering column, electrochromic mirrors, memory package, and twilight sentinel.
General Motors sent six 2003 Chevy Corvette 50th Anniversary Edition cars to France to be used in the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Of those six Corvettes, two were used for official pace car duties, one with an automatic transaxle, and the other with a six-speed. Those pace cars were modified with Simpson five-point harnesses attached to a harness bar, roof-mounted track lights, front and rear strobe lights, Borla exhaust (the catalytic converters were eliminated), harness bar-mounted handheld fire extinguishers, and Le Mans Pace Car graphics. After their stint at Le Mans, the pace cars were returned to the GM Heritage Collection. The six-speed coupe pace car was sold at auction in 2009 as part of General Motors’ bankruptcy.
Our feature 2003 Chevy Corvette 50th Anniversary LeMans Pace Car is the six-speed automatic transaxle copy that was used on the track. It is an early pre-production pilot car, not intended to be sold to the general public when produced. As such, it is sold with a branded title, but can easily be titled and street driven in most, if not all, states. It wears a number “3” on its windshield adjacent to the VIN, and a number “1” decal on the rear window. It also has amber side marker lights, export taillights, and a European-spec license plate holder.
This 2003 Chevy Corvette LeMans Pace Car is equipped with the RPO 1SC 50th Anniversary Edition package that includes all the options and features listed above, as well as auto-dimming mirrors, functioning pace car strobe lights on the roof, front, and rear, LeMans Pace Car graphics, Simpson five-point harnesses attached to the harness bar, Borla exhaust, and the harness bar-mounted fire extinguisher. The Corvette has covered just 2,255 miles from new. Included in the sale is paperwork showing Pilot Car delivery in Southfield, Michigan, owners’ manuals in both English and French, rooftop light covers, a spare grille and side badging, spare parts, manufacturer’s literature, the factory build sheet, window sticker, a sealed 50th Anniversary Corvette VHS tape, and a 1:32 scale slot car model of this car.
Comments
The manual car is the one in the auction. Not the automatic. From the listing on BaT: This 2003 Chevrolet Corvette is a 50th Anniversary coupe that is said to be one of six sent to France by GM for use in the 2003 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Of those, it is one of two that were used in official pace car duties, and according to the seller it is the only one that was specified with a six-speed manual transaxle.
The photos are also indicate a manual. Also, there we never any 6 speed auto C5 Corvettes.
Oh, man.
