Van Gisbergen, Allmendinger Swapping NASCAR Chevy Camaros At Roval

Shane van Gisbergen and AJ Allmendinger, both Cup Series road course aces, will swap rides this weekend for the race on the Charlotte Roval on October 13th, 2024. Both drivers currently race on a part-time basis for NASCAR Chevy team Kaulig Racing in the highest echelon of North American stock car racing.

Allmendinger and van Gisbergen both raced at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend, although their cars looked a little different. Van Gisbergen drove the No. 16 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1, finishing 17th after leading nine laps. Allmendinger drove the No. 13 Camaro and finished 25th, also having led nine laps.

However, this weekend, van Gisbergen will drive the No. 13 NASCAR Chevy, making his 10th start in the division this year. It’ll be his first race at the Roval, which is short for “road course oval.” The track itself is a hybrid course that uses part of the Charlotte Motor Speedway oval track joined with the twisting infield road course.

“The Roval is such a unique track and unlike anything I’ve ever raced,” van Gisbergen said in a team release. “It’s a pretty cool track, with the blind crest and hairpin spot and it’s going to be a challenge for me. We don’t really run on tracks with big curbs, so it’s going to be interesting to feel the curbs and learn how much I can take and use and how to pass. Just a lot to learn this weekend in my WeatherTech Chevy Camaro, but it will be a lot of fun!”

Meanwhile, AJ Allmendinger will drive the No. 16 NASCAR Chevy. He has four Cup Series starts at the unique track under his belt and is the race’s most recent victor, winning the 2023 running of the event. So far this year, Allmendinger has three top-10 finishes in Cup, and has led 22 laps.

“It’s always cool to be able to be the defending race winner,” Allmendinger said. “The Roval has always been special to me and last year’s race is one that I will never forget. I’m excited to get back in the No. 16 Celsius Chevy; hopefully we can go out there this weekend and do the same thing we did last year to gain some momentum for our team.”
