Two Xfinity NASCAR Chevy Teams Penalized After Kansas

Two Xfinity Series teams were penalized after the most recent race at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, and both belong to the NASCAR Chevy camp. One is eligible for the 2024 Playoffs, while the other did not make the cut.

According to the latest penalty report from NASCAR.com, the No. 97 Chevy Camaro SS of Shane van Gisbergen and the No. 9 Camaro of Brandon Jones were both nabbed in postrace inspection for loose lug nuts found on the race cars. No point deductions were issued, but the crew chiefs for both NASCAR Chevy teams were fined $5,000. Jones’ crew chief is Adam Wall, while Kevin Walter sits atop the box for van Gisbergen.

Jones drove the No. 9 Camaro to sixth at Kansas, but he is not championship eligible. Van Gisbergen finished eighth, and is currently sixth in the Playoffs, eight points above the cutoff line.

Jones is in his second season driving the No. 9 Camaro for JR Motorsports. His partnership with the organization has yet to produce a win, but he has two runner-up finishes under his belt at Kansas last fall and again at Charlotte earlier this year. Jones does have three wins in the division, however, earned while he drove the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Meanwhile, Van Gisbergen is a rookie in the division. He is an Australian Supercars Championship veteran who moved over to NASCAR to race on a part-time basis in the Cup Series last year. He won the division’s first turn on the Chicago Street Course in 2023 and eventually left Supercars to drive the No. 97 Camaro full-time during this year’s Xfinity Series campaign. He has three wins thus far in the division, all on road courses: Portland, Sonoma, and the Chicago Street Course. Van Gisbergen already has a fulltime Cup Series ride lined up for the 2025 season, where he will drive the No. 88 Camaro fielded by Trackhouse Racing.

The next Xfinity Series race marks the division’s return to Talladega Superspeedway for a Playoff race since 2022, and is scheduled for October 5th, 2024.
