General Motors has released a Safety Recall for certain units of the 2024 GMC Sierra HD pickup that were produced with a transmission direct overdrive carrier built with an incorrect caged piston bearing. The recall calls for a replacement of the entire transmission and several adjacent components. The program is in effect until October 31st, 2026.
The issue affects both Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission builds (RPO MGM with the L5P engine and RPO MKM with the L8T engine). It doesn’t affect units equipped with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic (RPO MGU) with integrated Power Take-Off (PTO).
The problem: 2024 GMC Sierra HD trucks that are affected by this issue have a transmission direct overdrive carrier built with an incorrect caged piston bearing.
The hazards: affected trucks could experience transmission failure, gear slippage, excessive vibration and noise, increased friction and heat, and a risk of complete lockup of the transmission.
The fix: certified GM service technicians are instructed to replace the transmission and transfer all components as necessary. The fix should take about 7.4 hours to complete.
Affected components: transmission, transmission fluid, transmission fluid cooler pipe seal and fitting, exhaust system seals, transmission mount and bolts, front axle drive shaft slip yoke boot clamps and retainers.
Affected vehicles:
Number of affected vehicles: it’s unclear at this time how many 2024 GMC Sierra HD units are affected by the issue.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles, telling them to make an appointment with the local GM dealership’s service department. 2024 GMC Sierra HD owners who want to see if their pickup is involved in the recall can visit my.gm.com/recalls and enter the vehicle’s VIN to see open recalls or other quality issues.

2024. HOW THE HELL DOES THIS $HIT HAPPEN?
Three letters. U A W
I love GMC
Merican made LOL,
It would be a little bit interesting to know whether the part(s) was designed incorrectly or built incorrectly. I wonder how long Allison is going to allow GM to use their name for transmissions that GM builds. It can’t be doing their reputation any good.
Just like that TD BANK $3 billion fine for money laundering. Its plain corporate negligence.Shareholders need to stepup and hold executives accountable.
Just stay away from the new stuff, old school worked much better. I’m already on my 3rd trans in my 2014 sierra 1500. Allison trans is the only good thing coming out of gm. Chevy transmissions are notorious for problems.
Y 2024.3500 recall letter only says they will install software to let you know about 10000 miles before wheel lock up, no mention of new trans. That sounds like bs. To me!
If it’s bad replace it. I didn’t buy a heavy duty / to dam expensive truck to play around with while towing a 23000 lb 5th wheel
Griff-Sierra2020.3500 just had the software update. I now have more questions. Not sure it was programmed to more than monitor…going home I avg 10.5 mpg. 10.5 mpg was what I would avg pulling 5th wheel. Looks like I don’t have overdrive anymore. Anybody else notice a change after software upgrade?????????
I have a 2024 gmc Sierra with 9500 miles. Heard a humming noise, so I went straight to the dealer. Their shop manager said they had received a bolo describing this problem w/this transmission.
