As GM Authority has covered extensively in the past, sideshows, also known as street takeovers, can be incredibly dangerous. These unauthorized car events feature reckless stunts like burnouts and donuts on public streets, and often result in serious accidents and injuries. The latest example of this chaos involves a Pontiac GTO and a particularly unlucky spectator, with the incident going viral on social media.
In the video, the rear-wheel-drive Pontiac GTO is seen doing donuts at a sideshow, spinning its tires in the middle of an intersection while spectators stand a bit too close for comfort. The car, equipped with an aftermarket exhaust “flamethrower” kit, spits flames as it liquifies the rear rubber, adding to the spectacle. For those that don’t know, the flamethrower mod essentially dumps raw fuel into the exhaust system, creating fiery bursts from the tailpipes.
As the GTO continues its wild performance, it unexpectedly jumps into the air after running something over. What emerges from the smoke and fire is a bystander who got too close. The GTO had struck the individual, leaving them sprawled on the ground. The situation gets worse when the spectator tries to flee, but their pants are down, likely caught by the vehicle’s spinning tires. Their undergarments are also shredded, leaving their rear exposed, while the GTO’s fiery exhaust appears to have burned their clothes.
The video cuts off abruptly, but it’s clear the spectator suffered both physical and emotional damage. Despite the severity of the incident, the crowd, as is typical in these events, merely captures video of it on their phones.
The video is another glaring reminder of the inherent dangers of sideshows. They may seem like harmless fun, but the risks far outweigh the rewards. Whether you’re behind the wheel or in the crowd, participating in or watching these unsanctioned events can very quickly lead to disaster.
