No. 1 NASCAR Chevy Wins Controversial Xfinity Series Roval: Video

The Xfinity Series race on the Charlotte Roval on October 12th, 2024 came down to an Overtime finish – one that ended up being extremely controversial. Parker Kligerman, driver of the No. 48 NASCAR Chevy Camaro SS, was on the wrong end of things when the race went green, and he watched victory slip through his fingers as the No. 1 Camaro of Sam Mayer cruised past him to the win.

NASCAR rules state that if the leader takes the white flag, the next flag ends the race, whether that is the checkered flag at the stripe or the yellow flag due to an on-track incident. Kligerman appeared to take the white flag signaling the final lap of the race when a caution was waved for the No. 42 NASCAR Chevy of Leland Honeyman, which had wrecked into the tire barriers and become stuck.

The No. 48 NASCAR Chevy of Parker Kligerman takes a turn on the Roval. Meanwhile, The No. 1 Camaro driven by Sam Mayer took the win.

Kligerman thought that he had won and began celebrating his victory, only to be informed that he had not broken under the white flag when the caution lights came on. The caution lights illuminated while Kligerman was mere inches away from the line.

Mayer’s No. 1 NASCAR Chevy executed the pass on the restart and drove to the checkered flag in first place as Kligerman faded to sixth at the line.

“It was full contact. Sam didn’t do anything egregious,” Kligerman said. “It was hard racing, but as close as you could be to the line. Now I want to cry – I’m not going to cry, but I really love this game, and it would’ve meant the world.”

As such, Kligerman was eliminated from the Playoffs, as was fellow NASCAR Chevy driver Shane van Gisbergen in the No. 97 Camaro. Sam Mayer will race in the Round of 8 as a championship hopeful. It’s worth noting that Kligerman will retire from fulltime competition at the end of the 2024 season.
