The 2025 model year will be the last for the ninth-generation Chevy Malibu, signaling the departure of one if the final remaining ICE-based sedans in the U.S. auto market. Previously, production of the 2025 Chevy Malibu was expected to conclude at the GM Fairfax Assembly plant sometime this fall. Now, GM Authority has exclusively learned the date that 2025 Chevy Malibu production is scheduled to come to an end.
According to GM Authority sources, production of the 2025 Chevy Malibu is expected to end on November 15th, 2024.
As covered previously, the end of Malibu production will result in a temporary lay off for roughly 680 employees at the GM Fairfax facility. The layoffs will precede a retooling effort at the facility to prepare for production of the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV, with the facility set to reopen next year. Employees affected by the layoffs will be supported per the latest agreement between the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union and General Motors.
Notably, the GM Fairfax facility also produces the ICE-based Cadillac XT4. XT4 production will be paused after January of 2025 to enable the retooling efforts to go forward. The retooling will be supported by a $390 million investment. Production is expected to resume some time in mid-2025.
Looking ahead, the all-new, next-generation Chevy Malibu is expected to debut for the 2026 or 2027 model year.
For now, the 2025 Chevy Malibu is still available to configure at Chevrolet’s website. Four trim levels are offered, including LS, RS, 1LT, and 2LT, with pricing starting at $26,995 for the base-model LS, $27,995 for RS, $29,295 for 1LT, and $32,695 for 2LT. Prices listed here include destination freight charge ($1,195). Check out our previous coverage for in-depth 2025 Chevy Malibu pricing information, including all of the packages and options on offer.
Under the hood, the 2025 Chevy Malibu is powered by the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, which is rated at 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Under the skin, the Malibu rides on the GM E2 platform.

So what’s the real verdict on the Malibu dying? Many months ago, several media outlets were reporting that the Malibu is permanently cancelled, but GM Authority is still saying that a new model is coming out in 2026 or 2027. Were the other media wrong? In official statements, was GM ambiguous about the Malibu’s fate?
Camaro E/28 sedan will probably replace it knowing Mary.
I’d buy that!
I really don’t believe the Malibu will be back in 2026 or 2027. If a new Malibu is launched it will be built in Mexico or Brazil or China to save money. The Malibu is going away because GM doesn’t make enough profit for the Company. They continue to make Escalades, Tahoes, Suburbans, Pick ups but no more sedans because they don’t make enough profit. They don’t care if jobs go to other countries and leave the USA. I watched GM do this for years and voiced my opinion how bad this practice is for the Country and the Company.
Henry Ford paid his workers well because he knew that they would buy his cars. Today’s CEO can’t see any further than the tip of their nose.
The Malibu makes more profit than ANY of GM’s EV products….
Eliminating profitable models in hopes of overtaking Tesla is insanity. Volt isn’t even needed w/EV Nox.
A next gen Malibu would cost nothing. Simply replace w/Chinese LaCrosse or Regal which are only reskins meaning little tooling investment.
A big soundproof built for Buick and rebadged as Malibu could finally put pressure on Accord.
Shooting themselves in the foot once again. The product holes in gM and Ford are insane and keep getting worse by the year. They aren’t going to survive long term selling 75-100K pickups/SUV’s and low to no profit EV’s
This right here is the real problem. Look at Stellantis as the canary in the coal mine for this issue. FOR YEARS they have starved their once-thriving brands from a full model lineup, widdling down Chrysler to just a single (old) model, with Dodge, Fiat, Alfa & Ram not far behind. The numbers don’t lie, people don’t like to move from Brand to Brand to move up or down in the model lineup, a Dodge buyer will not neccsarily cross shop Fiat or Chrysler just becuase they want a small car or minivan. The problem with GM and Ford, is they are quickly abandoning entire market segments to foreign competiors. The Japanese, Koreans and even the Germans have no problem selling large volumes of sedans. They just makeand sell a competitive product…
A good chance it could be back as a new hybrid.Mary did say they was considering a hybrid but did say for what model would be used. GM could the 2nd generation Volt body style with updated battery system. The Volt did look similar to the Malibu, so it easily be renamed as the Malibu ECO. GM could use the volt tech system they still own. Just a thought.
What a bunch of malarkey! There’s no new Malibu coming! Stop trying to fool us with that! The discontinuation of the Malibu is permanent! Plans and the development of the next gen Malibu apparently was canceled for obvious reasons so they can get the production of the next generation Bolt EUV ready. So that means there isn’t a new Malibu coming!
Barra is just taking a page out of the Jack Welch playbook. Short-term profits never work in the long term. The Malibu’s sales are not bad.
It’s frustrating to see gm so befuddled and confused about what to do. This really is a pretty good car and worth keeping around in another generation.
End of production on my birthday! What a sad, sad birthday! And the most curious thing is that I was born in a Malibu in 1981!
Long life the Malibu ….!!!
